COLUMBIA, Mo.- The Missouri Tigers (3-1) had no problem in San Diego this past weekend claiming San Diego State University's Pacific Bell Tournament title. Led by the play of junior Amanda Lassiter, the Tigers defeated Portland State on Friday night, 67-48, before winning the title on Saturday over San Diego State by a score of 85-61.
Lassiter was the story for Missouri. She scored only 5 points in Friday night's game, but collected 6 steals and blocked four shots. On Saturday against San Diego State, Lassiter registered 11 steals, a single game Missouri and Big 12 record. She scored 17 points and had 8 assists, putting her just two assists shy of a triple-double. Lassiter was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
Missouri jumped all over San Diego State with a devastating full court press in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Tigers, led by Lassiter, forced 10 San Diego State turnovers in the first 4 minutes, 53 seconds of the game. After a San Diego State free throw at the 19:13 mark, the Tigers had a 2-1 lead. By the time the clock read 14:02, Missouri had jumped out to a 25-1 advantage. The Tigers forced the Aztecs into 36 turnovers in all, 20 of them in the first half.
Marlena Williams added 13 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists for the Tigers while four others scored 9 points. Amy Monsees, who led the Tigers with 17 points over Portland State in Friday's game, joined Lassiter on the All-Tournament Team.
