
Softball Drops Game One to South Carolina

The Tigers were held scoreless after the first inning, as they fell to 23-23 overall and 6-10 in SEC play.
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou softball (23-23, 6-10 SEC) dropped a 5–2 contest against South Carolina (25-20, 4-12 SEC) on Friday, April 17, at Mizzou Softball Stadium.
Junior Stefania Abruscato and junior Abby Hay each launched solo home runs in the first inning. Freshman Abby Carr earned the loss in this one, as she moves to 5-4 this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Junior Stefania Abruscato sparked the Tigers' offense in the bottom of the first, blasting a solo home run to right-center. Two batters later, junior Abby Hay added another long ball with a solo shot to left-center, giving Mizzou an early 2–0 advantage.
South Carolina answered in the top of the second with a double down the left-field line. The runner later scored on a sacrifice fly after advancing on a groundout to cut the lead to 2–1.
Junior Claire Calahan swiped her third bag of the season in the bottom of the second, but the Tigers were unable to bring her home.
South Carolina tied the game in the fourth with a solo home run to left-center field. This was senior Cierra Harrison's final inning in the circle, as she ended the day with 4.0 innings pitched and two runs given up.
In the top of the fifth, South Carolina reached on a leadoff walk after Carr took control of the mound. Two batters later, the Gamecocks took the lead with a two-run home run to left-center field to make it 4–2.
South Carolina added an insurance run at the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5–2. On that play, senior Haidyn Sokoloski robbed a home run, as the Tigers ended up only giving up a sacrifice fly compared to a grand slam.
Mizzou was unable to rally in the bottom half, falling 5–2.
GAME NOTES
- Larissa Anderson moves to 395-241-1 all-time and 11-5 against the Gamecocks
- The Tigers are 18-9 against South Carolina and 8-3 in Columbia, Mo.
- This is the Tigers first loss to the Gamecocks since 2019, as they won the last nine games.
- Freshman Abby Carr moves to 5-4 on the season.
