
Marissa McCann Throws First Career Complete Game Shutout in Game Two Victory Over South Carolina

The Tigers evened the series, as they move to 24-23 on the season, and 7-10 in SEC play.
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou softball (24-23, 7-10 SEC) got the shutout victory against South Carolina (25-21, 4-13 SEC) 5-0 to even the series on Saturday, April 18, at Mizzou Softball Stadium
Junior Pitcher Marissa McCann threw her first career SEC complete-game shutout as she recorded six strikeouts. Junior Stefania Abruscato brought home two of the Tigers' five runs, and freshman Gracie Britton recorded an RBI in a pinch-hitter situation in the fourth inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tigers showcased their defense early in the ballgame with the score knotted at zero. South Carolina had runners on first and third in the third. Junior Clare Cahalan kept the Gamecocks scoreless in the inning as she threw out the runner trying to score on the flyout. Freshman Sidney Forrester completed the inning with a diving catch, as USC went scoreless with runners in scoring position.
Missouri posted the opening runs in the third and fourth innings, which came from a sacrifice fly by Abruscato, which gave the Tigers a 1-0 advantage after three.
In the fourth, Britton hit a bloop single that went over the Gamecocks' shortstops head, which brought home two runners, as she was able to advance to third on a throwing error. This was followed by a wild pitch, which brought another runner home for the Tigers, making it 4-0. The Tigers capped off the inning with an RBI single from Abruscato, which gave them a 5-0 lead.
McCann controlled the Gamecocks' hitters for the remainder of the game, as she completed the shutout, and helped lead the Tigers to a 5-0 victory.
GAME NOTES
- The Tigers are 19-9 against South Carolina and 9-3 in Columbia, Mo.
- Pitcher Marissa McCann earns her first SEC shutout with six strikeouts and moves to 8-8 on the season.
- Stefania Abruscato had two RBIs in the game and has 33 on the season.
