Prior to the professional ranks, Joyner spent a season as associate head strength and conditioning coach/head powerlifting coach at McKendree University.

From 2014-18, he served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Florida State, overseeing the men's and women's golf, track and field, and cross country programs. During his time in Tallahassee, he coached 16 athletes who qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
