STARKVILLE, Miss. – No. 24/25 University of Missouri softball (23-14, 3-6 SEC) could not slow the Mississippi State (25-13, 6-4 SEC) bats, falling on the road by a score of 9-2 in the series opener. The Bulldogs scored four in the fifth and three in the sixth to put away the Tigers.
RECAP
For the fifth-straight game, the Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Jenna Laird doubled off the right field wall to lead off the game and advanced to third on an error by the MSU shortstop. Brooke Wilmes hit a ground ball to second and Laird was caught between third and home, but the ball was thrown away, allowing Laird to score. With two on and one out, a sharp ground ball to short quickly ended the Tigers' threat.
Laurin Krings worked out of a jam in the first inning with runners on the corners and two outs, getting the final batter of the inning to ground out to third.
The Bulldogs were able to tie it up in the bottom of the third with a solo home run to left field off the bat of Mia Davidson.
With two outs in the fourth inning, Casidy Chaumont lined a ball back up the middle that deflected off the second base bag into right center for a double. She then advanced to third and scored on a pair of wild pitches to regain the lead at 2-1. However, another solo home run for the Bulldogs tied it back up in the bottom half of the inning.
Mississippi State broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth with a four-run inning with four hits, a walk and a hit batter.
Mizzou was able to load the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth after a pair of singles from Bailey and Wert and a walk from Honnold. However, the Tigers were unable to cut into the MSU lead, ending the inning with three-straight strikeouts. The Bulldogs added three more runs in the bottom half of the sixth, putting the score at 9-2.
NOTES
Kendyll Bailey went 2-for-3 with a double, extending her hitting streak to nine games and her on-base streak to 13. Her nine-game hitting streak matches the longest by a Tiger on the season.
Bailey has posted back-to-back multi-hit games for the second time in her career.
Jenna Laird has reached and scored in the first inning of the last five games.
Casidy Chaumont has scored each of the last six times she has reached base.
