OXFORD, Miss. – No. 21/19 University of Missouri softball could not overcome another five-run inning, falling by a score of 5-3 to Ole Miss. The Tigers homered three times in the contest, but they were all solo shots.
Jenna Laird singled and stole a base to get the game started, but she was ultimately stranded on second in the top of the first.
In the bottom of the second, Ole Miss nearly scratched the first run of the game across on a two-out double, but a relay from Brooke Wilmes to Jenna Laird on to Hatti Moore got the runner at the plate for the third out of the inning.
Both pitchers were strong through the first four innings. Catelyn Riley held the Tigers scoreless while Laurin Krings was putting up zeroes in her own right.
The Tigers jumped out in front in the top of the fifth. Kendyll Bailey led off the inning with a solo homer to right center, her sixth of the season.
Ole Miss responded in a big way in the bottom half of the inning. After a walk and an infield single, Bre Roper crushed a three-run home run to center to give the Rebels a 3-1 lead. After a walk and a strikeout, Abbey Latham homered to center to make it 5-1.
Mizzou had two runners on with two outs in the top of the sixth after a Jenna Laird infield single and a Kara Daly walk. Alex Honnold hit a grounder back up the middle, and the pitcher initially misplayed it, but she was able to gather it and make the throw to first to end the inning.
The Rebels loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, bringing the walk-off run to the plate, but the Tigers were able to escape the jam.
Kendyll Bailey added her second homer of the afternoon on the first pitch of the seventh, lining one over the left field wall. After Emma Raabe lined out sharply, Gabi Deters crushed a 2-2 pitch over the right center wall for her second homer of the year to make it 5-3. Ole Miss was able to get the final two outs on two pitches with a foul out and another line out.
