Mizzou Tennis Makes Deep Run in First Milwaukee Classic Appearance

Milwaukee, Wis. – Mizzou Tennis held its own in the ITA Milwaukee Classic this past weekend, led by a semi-final doubles performance by Bronte Murgett and Marta Oliveira. In singles, Ellie Wright made a showing in the Round of 16 and Oliveira won out in the consolation bracket.
Murgett and Oliveira defeated Kacey Moore and Jillian Taggart (Navy) on Saturday, 7-6, and advanced to the doubles' quarterfinals. On Sunday, the duo took down Ludmila Kareisova and Sabrina Machalova (Ole Miss), 6-4. In the semi-finals, Murgett and Oliveira fought hard but fell to Reilly Tran and Fiona Crawley (North Carolina), 6-2.
Martinez and Wright, Mizzou's other competing duo, came close in the Round of 16 but were overcome by Tran and Crawley, 7-5.
Wright entered the singles competition and defeated Moore in the Round of 32, 6-4, 6-2. In the Round of 16, Crawley topped Wright, 6-3, 7-6. Oliveira and Murgett lost in the Singles Round of 32 but succeeded in their consolation matches.
Oliveira defeated Ava Markham (Wisconsin), 6-3, 6-2. Murgett similarly beat Emilija Kojcic (Marquette), 6-2, 6-3. Oliveira went to the back draw finals and won against Emma Staker (Oklahoma), 6-2, 1-6, 11-9.
"I'm really proud of the effort, grit and energy these teammates put out on the court together," said head coach Chris Wootton. "We went 10-6 and had a fifth-year senior stand tall and win the back draw – a very exciting start to our tournament season."
The Tigers have a short break before their next tournament, the ITA All-Americans. The tournament will be held October 1-10 in Charleston, S.C.
