AUSTIN, TX – In a challenging season opener, the University of Missouri's tennis team fought hard in its first lost to No. 1 Texas, 7-0.

Doubles duo Bronte Murgett and Gabriela Martinez had a commanding 5-2 lead against Allura Zamarripa and Bella Zamarripa, but Texas secured the doubles point before the pair could finish their set.

In singles play, Valentina Vazquez snagged a first set victory against No. 117 Malaika Rapolu, 6-2. Rapolu won the second set and beat Vazquez 10-5 in the third game. Elys Ventura came back strong to win the second set of her match, 6-1, and force a third set. Bronte Murgett stayed close with Peyton Stearns, but was ultimately routed, 6-3, 6-3. Gabriela Martinez similarly fought hard, losing to No. 40 Kylie Collins, 7-5, 7-5.

"The team performed at an incredibly high level. This was our first competition in four months and we took a step forward today." said head coach Chris Wootton, "This first step piggybacks off our team's performance from the end of last season! We are growing a new culture and program and I am very happy with how tough, gritty and relentless our team was today!"

The Tigers stay on the road to face No. 22 Oklahoma State on Tuesday, Feb. 8 at 5:30 p.m.
