Tigers Coming off Top-10 Showing in Arizona Spring Opener
The Mizzou Women's Golf team returns to action this weekend at the Florida State Match Up, a 54-hole competition set for Feb. 29-March 1 at Bay Point Golf Club in Panama City, Fla. The Tigers, fresh off a 10th-place outing last week when they shot even par (285-290-289 = 864) at the spring opening Westbrook Invitational (Peoria, Ariz.), will play 36 holes this Saturday at the Match Up, followed by a final 18 holes on Sunday.
Head Coach Stephanie Priesmeyer's lineup will remain the same for the second straight week. Leading things off in the No. 1 spot is junior Noelle Beijer (Assendelft, The Netherlands), who shot even par for three rounds last week in Arizona (72-70-74 = 216) and tied for 32nd place overall at the Westbrook Invitational. Beijer is ranked 12th in the SEC currently with her 71.94 season scoring average.
Beijer will have a special honor this week, as she will carry the Folds of Honor bag that celebrates the life of 1st Lieutenant William Anthony Edens, a Mizzou grad who was killed during service in Iraq on April 28, 2005. Throughout the course of this season, a designated member of the Tiger lineup will carry a special golf bag embroidered with Lt. Edens' name at each tournament. The team asks that fans consider pledging a dollar amount for every birdie made this season by the Tiger carrying Lt. Edens' bag (one-time flat donations are also certainly welcomed).
For more information on 1st Lt. Edens and how to donate to the season-long fundraiser, please visit www.MUTigers.com/FoldsOfHonor. The total amount of birdies collected with the Folds of Honor bag is 45 heading into the Florida State Match Up.
Cherise Otter (Bloomington, Ind.) occupies the No. 2 spot in the Tiger lineup, and the senior looks to build on her spring opener, when she tied for 63rd last week with a three-round total of 222 (73-73-76). Otter is the only Tiger in the lineup with previous experience at the Florida State Match Up – she competed there in 2018 and tied for 52nd place overall with a three-round 232 total (79-75-78), as the Tigers finished in sixth place.
Freshman Bri Bolden (Mokena, Ill.) had a breakthrough performance last week at the Westbrook, and she'll work to keep momentum flowing after leading the team with a seven-under par 209 total which included bookend rounds of four-under par 68 (68-73-68). That netted Bolden a tie for ninth individually, marking the first time since 2016 that a Tiger freshman posted a top-10 finish in any tournament, and her 54-hole total was the second-best by a freshman in program history (206 by Emma Allen at the 2015 Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown). Bolden will play from the No. 3 spot in the lineup this week once again.
Fellow freshman Sophia Yoemans (Red Wing, Minn.) is in the No. 4 spot and is coming off a solid showing last week when she was one over par for the tournament with a 217 total (72-74-71) that included a one-under par 71 on the final day that put her in a tie for 37th place individually. Yoemans had an impressive fall season for Priesmeyer, as she finished second on the team with a 73.86 scoring average in five fall outings.
Anchoring the Tiger lineup in the No. 5 spot for the second straight week will be sophomore Keagan Dunn (Braselton, Ga.). Dunn made her first start of the season last week in Arizona and finished in a tie for 76th place overall, with a 227 total (76-74-77).
This will mark the seventh edition of the Florida State Match Up, and Mizzou will be making its fifth appearance in the tournament. The Tigers have played the last four Match Ups, finishing ninth in 2015, seventh in 2016, fifth in 2017 and sixth in 2018. The tournament took a one-year hiatus in 2019, and this year it returns at a new location after previously being played in Tallahassee.
The unique format matches each of the 10 teams paired into groups of two that not only compete with each other for the head-to-head match-up title, but against all teams for the team and individual championships.
Here's the head-to-head match up team pairings for the weekend (Golf Week team rankings in parentheses):
- Mizzou (83) vs. Coastal Carolina (62)
- Florida State (26) vs. Alabama (14)
- Clemson (43) vs. LSU (13)
- Kansas State (93) vs. Toledo (203)
- Memphis (124) vs. South Florida (78)
