Tigers fall 2-0 to fifth-ranked Wildcats

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Mizzou Softball opened the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a 2-0 loss to No. 5 Arizona, Thursday at Big League Dreams Park. The Tigers (9-3) took the Wildcats to the final pitch, with the leading run flying out to left field to end the game.

Mizzou was able to hold Arizona's (12-0) leadoff hitters to hit only .167 (1-of-6), but the lone hit was a solo home run to centerfield in the fourth inning that ultimately decided the game.

Turning Point

Down 2-0 entering the top of the seventh, Mizzou managed to put two runners in scoring position. Kendyll Bailey led off with a drop single to shallow centerfield. Hannah McGivern would pinch run for Bailey.

Megan Moll drew a walk to put the tying run on first, and Imani Myint advanced both runs into scoring position with a groundout to the third baseman.

With a chance to put some runs on the board, Brooke Wilmes battled to a full count, but ultimately flew out to left field to end the game.

Top Tigers

Megan Schumacher pitched a complete game in the loss, positing four strikeouts and allowing only one walk. She held the Wildcats to go 1-for-7 with runners on base.
Kendyll Bailey was 1-for-2 at the plate.
Emma Raabe tied her career high of 12 putouts.

"We can't have six of nine batters strike out. That turns it into a five inning game which is very hard to win," said head coach Larissa Anderson. "I know this team can compete with any team in the country regardless of the rankings. I also thought Megan Schumacher pitched a great game, especially in a tough environment against a team like Arizona."
