Pins at 125 and 133 kick start a dominant dual performance for the Tigers
COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 24 Mizzou Wrestling defeated Northern Illinois in the first dual of a Saturday doubleheader at Hearnes, 32-6, to move within one dual win of clinching its eighth consecutive MAC title and ninth straight conference title. The Tigers picked up pins at 125 and 133 to open the dual and never looked back. Mizzou improves to 9-5 on the season and 6-0 in MAC duals. Mizzou has won 20 consecutive MAC duals. With a win later today vs. Cleveland State, Mizzou will clinch at least a share of the MAC Regular Season Championship.
Mizzou started the dual with a dominant showing at 125 and 133, getting pins from Cameron Valdiviez and Allan Hart, respectively. Valdiviez nearly had Bryce West pinned in the first period, but West was put into concussion protocol. After he returned to the mat, he tallied a quick reversal to open the second and then pinned West for his third pin of the season. Hart made quicker work of his opponent – Caleb Brooks – needing just 1:32 to put him on his back.
After Grant Leeth dropped a 3-2 decision to NIU's Anthony Gibson at 141, No. 5 Brock Mauller got Mizzou back in the win column with a dominant 10-1 major decision with 2:12 of riding time. That improved Mauller to 19-1 on the season and extended Mizzou's lead to 16-3.
Reigning MAC West Wrestler of the Week Jarrett Jacques then grinded out a 5-2 decision over NIU's Dylan Thurston to move Mizzou's lead to 19-3 at the midway point. With the win, Jacques is the first Tiger starter to reach 20 wins this season as he's 20-3 on the season.
At 165, Peyton Mocco won by the slimmest of margins with a 1-0 decision over NIU's Izzak Olejnik to move Mizzou's lead to 22-3. Jeremiah Kent made it four straight bout wins for the Tigers with a 5-2 decision over Kenny Moore, with 1:31 of riding time, extending Mizzou's lead to 25-3, clinching the dual win.
Despite the dual being clinched in Mizzou's favor, that didn't stop the Tigers from posting bonus points. Facing a 14-1 foe in Brit Wilson, Dylan Wisman made light work of NIU's 184-pounder, registering a takedown at the horn to earn an 11-3 major decision, extending Mizzou's lead to 29-3.
Wyatt Koelling tallied a 9-3 decision with 2:28 riding time to extend the bout winning streak to six. Mizzou's Jacob Bohlken dropped his bout to NIU's Max Ihry, 3-1, in sudden victory to close the dual.
