COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Track & Field will continue with postseason competition next weekend as the qualifying field for the NCAA West Preliminary Championships were announced Thursday. Mizzou will send 25 student-athletes (10 men, 15 women) to compete in Sacramento, Calif., May 23-25. Mizzou's group of 29 entries will be looking to advance to the final rounds of the NCAA Championships, which will be held June 5-8 in Austin, Texas.
The Mizzou men will be led by redshirt sophomore Ja'Mari Ward (Cahokia, Ill.) and freshman Roberto Vilches (Mexico City, Mexico), who enter the meet with region's top mark in the long jump and high jump, respectively. Ward captured his second career conference title in the long jump at last weekend's SEC Outdoor Championships, as he produced a mark of 8.10m (26-7). The mark ranks as the top mark in the NCAA West Region this season, and the NCAA's second-best mark overall. Vilches is coming off a fifth-place finish in the high jump at the SEC Outdoor Championships, and still holds the nation's best mark in the event at 2.27m (7-5.25) at the Mizzou Spring Open (April 6).
The Mizzou women will be led by a trio of throwers with top-10 regional marks in redshirt senior Gabi Jacobs (Bloomington, Ill.), redshirt junior Jordan McClendon (Black Jack, Mo.) and redshirt sophomore Sophia Rivera (Brentwood, Mo.). Jacobs is coming off her third consecutive SEC discus championship, and will be looking to make her third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships, where she has finished fifth the last two seasons. Jacobs will also be competing in the shot put, where she has 19th-best mark at 16.08m (52-9.25). McClendon holds the sixth-best mark in the hammer throw at 65.68m (215-6), while Rivera has the third-best mark in the javelin at 55.73m (182-10).
Competition from Hornet Stadium is scheduled to begin Thursday, May 23 with field events at 2 p.m. CT and track events at 6:30 p.m. CT. A live stream of the meet will be available online for a subscription fee on FloTrack.org.
