Vilches moves to No. 2 all-time in high jump with nation’s best mark this season
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Track & Field hosted their first home track meet of the year at the Mizzou Spring Open on Saturday, as six individuals and one relay team recorded program top-10 marks. Freshman Roberto Vilches (Mexico City, Mexico) moved to the No. 2 spot on Mizzou's top-10 list with the nation's best leap in the high jump this season.
Also posting top-10 marks on the day for Mizzou was sophomore Nylo Clarke (Riverside, Mo.) in the 100m dash, redshirt senior Avery Carter (Lee Summit, Mo.) in the hammer throw and the 4x100m relay team.
The Mizzou women had a big day as well, as four individuals posted program top-10 marks. Freshman Arianna Fisher (San Jose, Calif.) and redshirt sophomore Sophia Rivera (Brentwood, Mo.) each moved to No. 3 in the triple jump and discus, respectively, while junior Allie Webb Platte City, Mo.) posted the No. 5 mark in the javelin and freshman Morgan O'Neal (Sylacauga, Ala.) the No. 6 time in the 400m hurdles.
NOTABLE FINISHES
Vilches cleared 2.27m (7-5.25) in the high jump to finish first and move to second all-time at Mizzou, surpassing Ben Lucero, who previously held the No. 2 spot with a mark of 2.25m (7-4.50) in 1982. The mark is the nation's best this season, as it ranks ahead of LSU's JuVaughn Harrison, who posed a mark of 2.22m (7-3.25) at the Texas Relays (March 27).
The men's 4x100 team of junior Caulin Graves (Kansas City, Mo.), Clarke, redshirt freshman Jayson Ashford (Fairview, Ill.), and redshirt sophomore Ja'Mari Ward (Cahokia, Ill.) moved to eighth all-time at Mizzou with a second-place finish at 40.53. In the 100m dash, Clarke ran 10.41 to move to No. 7 on the Mizzou top-10 list.
In the hammer throw, Carter improved his No. 3 all-time mark in the hammer throw by winning the event with a throw of 66.14m (217-0). His mark currently ranks 19th in the nation this season.
For the women, Fisher recorded a mark of 12.58m (41-3.25) in the triple jump to finish first, while Rivera posted a mark of 55.75 (182-11) in the discus to finish second as both now rank third on Mizzou's all-time top-10 list. In the javelin, Webb placed first and recorded a throw of 48.24 (158-3) to rank fifth all-time, while O'Neal won the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.83 to rank sixth all-time.
