Wright, Gruber Claim Ranked Doubles Win in Loss to No. 11 Texas A&M

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Sophomores Ellie Wright (Gainesville, Fla.) and Taylor Gruber (Spicewood, Texas) took down the nation's No. 55 doubles team but the Mizzou tennis team suffered a 5-0 loss to No. 11 Texas A&M Friday evening at the Mizzou Tennis Complex.
The Tigers fell to 11-7 overall and 0-6 in Southeastern Conference action, while the Aggies improved to 17-3 and 5-2.
DOUBLES
Mizzou picked up the first doubles victory of the day at No. 2 action, where Wright and Gruber downed the No. 55 ranked doubles tandem of Renee McBryde and Katya Townsend, 6-3. However, the Aggies responded with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 play to claim the doubles point. Juniors Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Serena Nash (Bradford, England) fell to No. 63 Tatiana Makarova and Jayci Goldsmith, 6-2, and junior Gabrielle Goldin (Bradenton, Fla.) and freshman Lisa Fukutoku (Tokyo, Japan) were defeated by No. 67 Riley McQuaid and Lucia Quitero, 6-3.
SINGLES
The Aggies won singles matches at No. 1, 3, 4 and 6 competition to claim the victory. Makarova earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nash at No. 3 to give Texas A&M and No. 50 Townsend defeated Middlebrooks, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 singles for a 3-0 Texas A&M advantage. Wright suffered a 7-5, 6-1 loss to McBryde at No. 4 action and Dorothea Faa-Hviding beat Goldin, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6.
Both Gruber and Fukutoku played strong, splitting the first two sets with their opponents, but their matches remained unfinished after the Aggies clinched the win.
