PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Following the fourth session of the 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, Mizzou Wrestling is in fifth place in the team race after moving its point total to 54.0 with some valuable wins in the wrestleback brackets. RS senior John Erneste (133) earned his first career All-America honor with a blood-round, triple-overtime win over NC State's Tariq Wilson, and true freshman Brock Mauller (149) also earned All-America honors with an overtime pin against Max Thomsen of Northern Iowa.

After Jaydin Eierman (141) and Daniel Lewis (174) earned All-America honors by advancing to the semifinals during session three, Mizzou now has four All-Americans this season. It is Mizzou's third straight season with at least four All-Americans.

Eierman and Lewis both missed chances to wrestle for national titles with semifinal losses. Eierman lost a 6-5 bout to Cornell's Yianni Diakomihalis at 141 and Lewis lost to Arizona State's Zahid Valencia, 11-3, at 174. Both Diakomihalis and Valencia are the defending national champions at those weights.

Below are the team scores for the top teams with just two sessions remaining:

  1. Penn State – 120.5
  2. Ohio State – 88.5
  3. Oklahoma State – 73.5
  4. Iowa – 68.0
  5. Mizzou – 54.0
  6. Cornell – 52.0
  7. Nebraska – 51.0

The action ramped up quickly for Mizzou, kick-started by an incredible bout from Erneste against NC State's Wilson. Erneste fell behind, 4-0, in the second period before recording a reversal and a nearfall to take a 6-4 lead. The two wrestled to a 7-7 tie at the end of regulation as Erneste nearly recorded an escape at the buzzer to force the tie. Both teams challenged the call – Mizzou that Erneste's escape was actually a reversal and NC State that the escape landed after time had expired. Neither held up. Erneste then scored a takedown at the buzzer in the third sudden victory period, which was challenged by NC State. That call was upheld and Erneste earned All-America honors in what was the most back-and-forth bout of the blood round.

Erneste then grinded out a 10-0 major decision over Penn State's No. 10 Roman Bravo-Young and can now finish no worse than sixth at the championships.

In the semifinals at 141, Eierman gave top-seeded Yianni Diakomihalis all he could handle. The two were all square at 3-3 after the first, but Diakomihalis tallied an escape in the second, which wound up being the difference as the two wrestled to a 2-2 stalemate in the third. Eierman missed the riding time point by just 13 seconds, which would have sent the bout into overtime.

Mauller's blood-round match was one of the most exciting bouts of the session at any weight class, in any bracket. He and No. 15 Max Thomsen of Northern Iowa wrestled to a 5-5 tie at the end of regulation. On mat five right in front of the black-and-gold-clad Mizzou fan section, Mauller scored a takedown and fall in the first sudden victory period to secure All-America honors as a true freshman.

Mauller then got sweet redemption later in the night. Iowa State's Jarrett Degen, seeded eighth at 149, was the only wrestler to beat Mauller during the regular season – and he did so twice. However, Mauller posted the win when it mattered the most, earning a 10-7 decision to advance in the wrestlebacks. He can now finish no lower than sixth.

At 174, Lewis trailed Valencia, 6-2, after the first. He tried to turn him in the second period, but Valencia was just too much as he claimed an 11-3 major decision win. True freshman Zach Elam saw his season end with a 1-0 blood-round loss to No. 7 Trent Hillger of Wisconsin. He finished one win shy of All-America status.
