COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Track & Field returned to action on Friday in the Missouri Intercollegiate Challenge, as one school record fell and two nation-best marks were set. Freshman Roberto Vilches (Mexico City, Mexico) broke Mizzou's oldest school record, as he eclipsed Nat Page's 1977 high jump school record, while redshirt sophomore Ja'Mari Ward (Cahokia, Ill.) posted the best mark in the nation this season in the long jump.
NOTABLE FINISHES
Vilches, who set the top U20 high jump mark in 2018 and captured a gold medal at the IAAF World U20 Championships in July, matched his personal best jump of all-time with a clearance of 2.26m (7-5). The jump broke Nat Page's 1977 mark of 2.22m (7-3.25), Mizzou's oldest record in events still contested, and is the top mark set in the nation this season. The jump also matched a facility record set by current Mizzou Associate AD Brian Brown, who set the same mark in a 1991 meet while competing as a professional.
In the long jump, Ward finished first with a jump of 7.81m (25-7.5), surpassing Tennessee State's R'Lazon Brumfield's mark of 7.53m (24-8.5) for the top mark in the nation this season. The jump was Ward's second-best long jump mark in his indoor collegiate career, trailing only the mark of 7.97m (26-1.75) he posted at the Missouri Collegiate Challenge (Feb. 16) last season. Ward also ran the 60m dash for the Tigers and placed first with a time of 6.93.
Redshirt junior Jordan McClendon (Black Jack, Mo.) moved up one spot from three to two on the weight throw program all-time list, as she finished first with a throw of 21.18m (69-6). The throw also ranks fifth in the nation this season.
On the track, Mizzou finished first in nine events, including senior Maya Cody (St. Louis, Mo.) in the women's 60m dash, redshirt freshman Jayson Ashford (Fairview Heights, Ill.) in the men's 200m dash and freshman Tori Findley (Blue Springs, Mo.) in the women's mile run.
