Tigers led by Scottish duo of Franssen and Stewart, who both earned Top-15 finishes
AWENDAW, S.C. - Mizzou Men's Golf tied for fifth-place amongst the annually stout lineup at The Hootie at Bull's Bay, held Sunday, March 25-Tuesday, March 27, at the Bulls Bay Golf Club outside of Charleston, South Carolina. Head coach Mark Leroux's squad started and finished the event with strong first (278) and third (279) rounds, but adverse conditions forced the entire tournament field to struggle during the event's second day.
Sophomore Rory Franssen (Inverness, Scotland) and freshman Jamie Stewart (Renfrewshire, Scotland) both tied for 14th-place to lead the Tigers at The Hootie. The Scottish duo got it done in different ways, but both ended up with identical 213s for the tournament. Franssen's scores, like that of the team score, were excellent in rounds one and three, but he was unable to maintain those low marks in round two. Stewart, meanwhile, shot an excellent 4-under-par in round three to surge up the leaderboard in the final round of action.
Finishing in the third slot for the Black & Gold was senior Trevor Ullestad (Jewell, Iowa), who finished in the Top-30 courtesy of his three round 218. Ullestad played great golf in rounds one and three, shooting scores of 71. The Hootie marked Ullestad's first Top-30 finish since this year's opening event, the Turning Stone Intercollegiate, in which he finished seventh.
Senior Hayden Buckley (Belden, Miss.) finished tied for 35th at The Hootie, shooting a three-over par through three rounds. Buckley was 3-under in rounds one and three combined, but the event's second day, a 6-over-par round, held him out of strong contention. Buckley's remarkable senior campaign continues after just his second event-over-par on the season.
In the last slot for Mizzou was junior Matt Echelmeier (Columbia, Mo.) who finished tied for 47th. Echelmeier was the leader in the clubhouse after day one, in which he shot a career-low round of 67. Back-to-back rounds of 77 dropped Echelmeier down the leaderboard for the event.
The Tigers head home and will not travel again until the postseason begins. The Black & Gold will host the Tiger Invitational at The Club at Old Hawthorne, and fans are encouraged to come and support the Tigers as they try and go for consecutive wins in their sole home event of the season.
