COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Softball continues its 2018 non-conference schedule this weekend at the Michele Smith Pediatric Cancer Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. The Tigers will compete in six games over three days, beginning with a doubleheader Friday against South Florida and UMass Lowell.
Highlighting Mizzou's trip to Clearwater is a quick rematch versus No. 15 Oklahoma State. The Tigers and Cowgirls met last weekend (Feb. 10) at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Mizzou nearly tallied an improbable seventh inning rally, but ultimately fell 6-3 to Oklahoma State.
#ShowMe Mizzou Game Notes
Mizzou's Offense Performs Well in Season-Opening Tournament
- Mizzou's offense proved to be its strongest asset at the Kajikawa Classic, hitting .302 collectively with 28 runs, six doubles, five home runs and 23 RBI. The Tigers as a group produced 12 multi-hit games and seven multi-RBI efforts at the plate.
- Individually, junior Kolby Romaine and redshirt junior Amanda Sanchez paced the team with a .438 average at the dish. Romaine had a team-leading three multi-hit games over the weekend, while Sanchez was right behind with two multi-hit performances. Sanchez paced the Tigers with three extra-base hits (two doubles, one home run).
- Four different Tigers (Trenity Edwards, Regan Nash, Romaine and Sanchez) visited #BombCity in Tempe, highlighted by a pair of long balls from Edwards.
- Mizzou was also active on the basepaths, as Gabby Garrison, Cayla Kessinger, Hatti Moore, Braxton Burnside, Delaney McDannold and Nash all earned one stolen base apiece.
Sanchez Makes Emphatic Return
- Sanchez returned to the Tigers lineup this past weekend (Feb. 9-11) at the Kajikawa Classic after missing almost all of the 2017 season due to injury. Coach Fogue was clearly happy to see her powerful bat back in action, as she posted a team-leading seven hits and two doubles.
- Sanchez struck quickly in Mizzou's true season-opening doubleheader last Friday (Feb. 9) with back to back three-hit performances against UTEP and CSUN. It marked her 40th and 41st career multi-hit games at Mizzou.
- Her two doubles, one home run and three RBI against CSUN also secured her 28th career multi-RBI game in Tiger black and gold.
- Sanchez enters this weekend's Michele Smith Invitational with a .350 career average, ranking T-7th all-time in Mizzou history.
Kessinger Cracks Record Book With 14-Game Hitting Streak
- Kessinger concluded her 2017 first-year campaign as one of the Tigers' hottest hitters. In fact, she hit safely in her final 10 games a year ago with two multi-hit games and five doubles.
- The lefty-swinging Tiger carried that momentum into the team's 2018 season-opening stretch at the Kajikawa Classic. Over five games played, Kessinger hit .400 with three runs, one double and two RBI.
- Kessinger hit safely in her opening four games in Tempe, Ariz., extending her hitting streak to 14 consecutive games dating back to the conclusion of the 2017 campaign. Her good fortunes unfortunately ran out with a 0-for-2 performance against Oregon State in the Tigers' Kajikawa Classic finale.
- Overall, Kessinger's 14-game hitting streak ranked T-7th longest in program history. Over that impressive stretch, she totaled four multi-hit games with six doubles and four RBI.
