Sophomore Paige Lowary earns complete game win in the circle
COLUMBIA, Mo. - No. 14 Mizzou Softball (38-12, 13-9 SEC) matched its season-long winning streak on Friday, as its 5-2 victory over South Carolina marked its ninth-consecutive win. The Tigers' current stretch of success matches the nine straight wins from earlier this season (March 16-26).
Mizzou took advantage of three costly South Carolina errors in the series opener. The Tigers scored their five runs on only six hits off Gamecocks pitching. Junior Natalie Fleming (Silex, Mo.) had Mizzou's top night at the plate, recording her fourth multi-hit game of the season.
Sophomore Paige Lowary (Dallas Center, Iowa) allowed two runs in the first inning but responded in a big way with six consecutive scoreless frames. Lowary tossed her 10th complete game of the year en route to her team-leading 21st victory in the circle.
Redshirt senior Taylor Gadbois (Maryville, Mo.) tallied her 50th stolen base of the year in the first inning. She became only the second player in Mizzou Softball history to produce 50-plus stolen bases in a single season.
Redshirt senior Sami Fagan (Dunnellon, Fla.) was active on the basepaths on Friday, posting two rare stolen bases of home plate. Fagan is now responsible for the last three steals of home for the Tigers.
All five of the Tigers' runs against the Gamecocks came in the first two innings of play. Following a two-run first inning, Mizzou poured on three additional runs in the second inning. Sophomore Amanda Sanchez (West Covina, Calif.) delivered an RBI single, Gadbois scored on a South Carolina error and Fagan stole home to cap the Tigers' scoring.
KEY MOMENT
Mizzou allowed two runs to South Carolina in the first inning, creating an early deficit. The Tigers responded quickly with tying runs in the bottom half of the first. Mizzou completed its eighth come from behind victory of the year with three runs in the second inning. Lowary was lights out over her last six innings of work, finishing with six strikeouts.
