Freshman Danielle Baumgartner sensational in relief despite loss

COLUMBIA, Mo. - No. 14 Mizzou Softball (38-13, 13-10 SEC) dropped a 3-1 contest to South Carolina on Saturday afternoon, evening the three-game series at one apiece. The loss snapped a season-high nine-game winning streak for the Tigers.

Freshman Danielle Baumgartner (Mexico, Mo.) was sensational in the circle for Mizzou despite the loss. The right-hander tossed 6.2 shutout innings in relief while striking out a career-high seven batters.

All three of the Gamecocks' runs came in the first inning as they took advantage of two walks and a hit by pitch. The Tigers' lone run came in the second inning after Kirsten Mack (Riverside, Calif.) raced home while a teammate was in a rundown in between first and second.

Sophomore Amanda Sanchez (West Covina, Calif.) and freshman Rylee Pierce (Visalia, Calif.) tallied Mizzou's lone hits of the afternoon. Pierce's second inning single extended her current hitting streak to six games.

KEY MOMENT

Mizzou's only blemish on the afternoon occurred in the opening frame. The Tigers allowed only one hit in the inning but two walks and a hit by pitch proved costly. Baumgartner was lights out in the circle in relief, retiring 12 consecutive batters over one stretch.
