Tigers hit .355 with 3 HR, 18 RBI, 13 SB
IOWA CITY, Iowa – No. 19 Mizzou Softball (31-12) continued its strong play in doubleheaders this season, recording 7-1 and 11-4 victories on Tuesday at Iowa. The Tigers' offense posted a combined .355 average with six doubles, three home runs, 18 RBI and 13 stolen bases over the two contests.
Redshirt senior Taylor Gadbois (Maryville, Mo.) was sensational atop Mizzou's lineup all day long, hitting .750 (6-for-8) with five runs scored, two RBI and six stolen bases. Senior Emily Crane (Troy, Mo.) also had a strong evening at the plate, highlighted by her second multi-home run game of the season in game two.
The Tigers cracked the scoreboard first in game one. Four stolen bases alone in the opening frame and junior Chloe Rathburn's (Mission Viejo, Calif.) 47th RBI of the year put Mizzou on top.
Mizzou added a pair of runs in the second inning as Gadbois and Crane tallied RBI singles. Gadbois posted her third stolen base through the first two innings, adding to the Tigers' early impressive display on the basepaths.
Junior Natalie Fleming (Silex, Mo.) came off the bench in the third inning and delivered a big pinch-hit two-run double. After going scoreless in the fourth and fifth inning, Mizzou bounced back with two runs in the sixth.
Freshman Regan Nash (Camden Point, Mo.) singled then swiped the Tigers' seventh stolen base of the game to open the frame. The seven steals tied the team's single-game high this year (at Ole Miss on March 11). Three batters later, freshman Kolby Romaine (Chino Hills, Calif.) posted her second home run in many days with a two-run shot to left.
Juniors Tori Finucane (Germantown, Md.) and Cheyenne Baxter (Norborne, Mo.) were outstanding in the circle, limiting the Hawkeyes to three hits and one run. Baxter earned her second victory of the year with 4.0 shutout innings in relief.
Mizzou delivered a quick start in game two after Crane's first inning two-run home run. The blast marked Crane's 14th home run this year. In the next inning, Crane's powerful senior year was on display yet again with her second home run of the game (team-leading 15th of 2016). The two-run blast marked Crane's second career multi-home run game.
Iowa had its best frame of the day in the fourth inning, scoring three runs following a costly Mizzou fielding error. The Tigers held on to a 7-4 advantage as the game moved to the seventh inning. Mizzou produced its second four-run inning of game two to seal the victory.
Gadbois and redshirt senior Sami Fagan (Dunnellon, Fla.) each posted RBI singles in the seventh while Rathburn delivered the final blow with a two RBI base hit. Sophomore Paige Lowary (Dallas Center, Iowa) was dominant in relief, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings while striking out three Hawkeyes.
Freshman Danielle Baumgartner (Mexico, Mo.) earned her 13th win of the season in game two, allowing one earned run over 4.2 innings pitched.
