Tigers look to rebound Wednesday with doubleheader at SLU
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – No. 15 Mizzou Softball (24-6, 3-3 SEC) fell in its series finale at No. 6 Alabama on Monday. The Tigers' 16-2 defeat was their second consecutive run-rule loss to the Crimson Tide to conclude the series.
Alabama took advantage of three costly errors and eight walks issued by Tiger pitching. Only half of the Crimson Tide's 16 runs scored Monday evening were earned runs.
The Crimson Tide struck first in the opening inning with three runs. Alabama busted the game wide open in the second inning, producing 12 runs on only six hits. A pair of three-run home runs in the second inning keyed the Crimson Tide's powerful frame.
Junior Cheyenne Baxter (Norborne, Mo.) did a nice job out of the bullpen for Mizzou, limiting Alabama to one run over its final two innings. Senior Emily Crane's (Troy, Mo.) two-run home run in the third inning was the Tigers' only run production of the night. Crane's eighth home run of the season gave her at least one RBI in 10 of the past 12 games played.
Freshman Regan Nash (Camden Point, Mo.) was another bright spot for Mizzou's lineup as she recorded her 10th multi-hit game of the 2016 campaign.
KEY MOMENT
Despite a poor first inning, Mizzou nearly escaped the opening frame down 1-0. A costly error made it a 3-0 deficit heading into the second inning. In the bottom half of the frame, Alabama poured on 12 runs on only six hits. The Tigers pitching staff issued six walks while the defense committed two uncharacteristic errors to fuel the home team's big inning.
