Tigers drop their first home game of the season

COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 15 Mizzou Softball (24-7, 3-4 SEC) dropped its first series opener of the 2016 campaign on Friday, falling 7-3 to visiting No. 16 Tennessee. Eight walks by Tigers pitching and clutch two out hitting keyed the Volunteers' victory at University Field.

Tennessee scored runs in each of the first three innings to begin its night. After managing only one run with the bases loaded and no outs in the first inning, the Volunteers produced three big runs with two outs in the second inning.

Mizzou got on the scoreboard in the third inning, highlighted by an RBI single from junior Chloe Rathburn (Mission Viejo, Calif.). Rathburn later added her sixth double of the season, marking her 11th multi-hit effort in 2016.

The Volunteers added two runs in the sixth inning to widen their lead. Junior Kirsten Mack (Riverside, Calif.) answered for Mizzou in the bottom half of the inning, recording an RBI ground out.

Tennessee's starting pitcher finished off her complete game victory, as she retired the Tigers in order in the seventh inning. The Volunteer hurler limited Mizzou to two earned runs while striking out eight.

Junior Tori Finucane (Germantown, Md.) pitched well in relief for the Tigers, tossing a scoreless frame in the seventh inning.

KEY MOMENT

Tennessee added three big runs in the second inning, as all runners came across with two outs. The Volunteers tallied three hits and took advantage of a wild pitch to add key early insurance runs.
