Damarea Crockett breaks school freshman record for yards in a game and season in loss
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Mizzou Football true freshman Damarea Crockett (Little Rock, Ark.) rushed for a Mizzou freshman record 225 yards and set the school record for rushing yards in a season by a Mizzou freshman (1,062) as Mizzou lost at No. 19 Tennessee, 63-37, on Saturday (Nov. 19). Mizzou piled up a season-high 420 yards on the ground, the most by a Mizzou team against an FBS team since 2003 against Texas Tech (469), in the loss.
After forcing UT to punt after four plays on its opening possession, Mizzou took the ensuing possession 88 yards over 12 plays, capped by a 22-yard TD run by Crockett. Mizzou got two huge third-down conversions on catches by TE Sean Culkin (Indian Rocks Beach, Fla.) to keep the drive alive as Culkin accounted for 35 of the yards on the drive. Crockett had 41 on the opening drive as well and tallied his 10th rushing TD of the year, extending his Mizzou freshman record while giving him the most at Mizzou since 2014 (10 by Russell Hansbrough).
The Tigers (3-8, 1-6 SEC) amassed 740 yards of total offense, a record vs. an FBS opponent and the most ever allowed by a Tennessee opponent. The Tigers also tallied a school-record 41 first downs, yet Tennesee came away with its first-ever win at Neyland Stadium against Mizzou.
UT (8-3, 4-3) countered on the next drive, going 98 yards over seven plays, torching Mizzou for 64 yards through the air, including the 49-yard TD from Joshua Dobbs to Jauan Jennings.
Mizzou drove the ball inside the red zone on its next possession, but came away with no points after going for it on fourth-and-17. Tennessee scored on its ensuing possession, a 57-yard toss from Dobbs to Josh Malone, putting the Vols up, 14-6.
The Tigers used a heavy dose of Crockett for its next scoring drive, going 71 yards over seven-plays with a Drew Lock (Lee's Summit, Mo.) TD run from two yards out capping the drive with a touchdown. Crockett ran for the previous 69 yards on the drive, on six carries.
The offensive show continued on the next drive for Tennessee as the Vols went 75 yards on nine plays over 3:00 minutes to regain the lead on an Alvin Kamara TD run from four yards out. The key play on the drive came when Mizzou appeared to have Dobbs sacked for a big loss on third-and-eight, but he scrambled for a 12-yard gain to keep the drive alive.
RB Ish Witter (Tampa, Fla.) scored on a two-yard plunge to cut the lead to 21-20 heading into halftime. Tennessee took advantage of a Lock interception on the first play of the third quarter, punching in a TD from five yards out. Mizzou countered with a one-yard Witter TD run to cap a 14-play, 5:01 drive that cut the score to 28-27 in favor of the Vols. Witter finished with a career-high 31 carries for 163 yards and two touchdowns.
After a pair of stops by each team, Mizzou appeared to stop Tennessee late in the third quarter on a fourth-and-four. Tennessee lined up to go for it and Mizzou had 12 men on the field, giving UT an automatic first down. A Dobbs 30-yard TD run two plays later gave UT an eight-point lead at the 2:39 mark of the third quarter, 35-27.
A Tucker McCann (O'Fallon, Ill.) field goal cut the lead to 35-30 but Dobbs broke a 70-yard TD run on Tennessee's next drive to put the Vols up, 42-30. A touchdown with 9:25 remaining put the game on ice midway through the fourth quarter as the Vols took a 49-30 lead and never looked back.
Mizzou will return home Friday to face Arkansas in the annual Battle Line Rivalry, Presented by Shelter Insurance at 1:30 p.m. on CBS. Tickets remain available, including the Battle Line Bargain.
