CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Mizzou Track & Field got their first taste of 2016 competition on Saturday (January 9), matching up against Illinois and Iowa at the second consecutive Border Battle. The day's events were highlighted by a set of exciting results from some of the Mizzou newcomers, as five freshman earned spots in the Mizzou history books with some of the fastest times in school history. Overall, the Tigers departed Champaign with nine PR's, seven All-Time Top Ten performances, and a lot of excitement for what's in store for the remainder of the indoor season.
"It was awesome to see 21 freshmen open up their collegiate career today. A few of those kids made a significant on the meet, and will continue making impacts with the program this year," Head Coach Brett Halter said. "It was really exciting to see the depth of the team and where we are right now with fitness. We are really ahead of the game compared to past years. Everyone took care of business over the fall, and took care of themselves over the holiday break, and it was just a terrific start to the competitive indoor season. A lot of the athletes ran off events today, which is good to see the range that some of our folks have. We did a really good job, we're really pleased."
Freshman Matthew Ludwig was the first to etch his name into the Mizzou record books as he kicked off his Tiger career with the No. 3 performance in school history. His final bar of 5.10m (16-8.75) was also good for the event win, the first of nine that the Tigers saw throughout the day. The women's pole vault also saw a new All-Time Top Ten mark with freshman Rayce Albino leading the Tigers with her third-place finish. She hit a final bar of 3.60m (11-9.75) for No. 10 in the Mizzou history books.
The men's long jump was next up, with sophomore John Warren and senior Tony Carodine closing the competition with a 1-4 finish, respectively. Warren's 7.25m (23-9.50) was good for a new PR in the event. The pair hit the runway once more later in the afternoon for the triple jump where they led the field, taking first and second. It was Carodine, though, who took the lead during the triple jump, hitting 15.03m (49-3.75) to win, followed by Warren in second.
The start of the track events was next, with freshman Maya Cody making a big statement in the 60m dash prelims, hitting the second-fastest time in school history – 7.54. She cruised across the line alongside junior LaQuisha Jackson, the school record holder in the event (7.31) to move on to the finals, where the pair went 2-3 in the competition, finishing in 7.45 and 7.62, respectively. Joining them on the line for the final was senior Alyssa Felton, who crossed in eighth overall.
Cody returned to the line in the 400m dash, where she left yet another mark in the Mizzou history books, winning the competition in 55.56, the sixth fastest time in Mizzou history. Jackson finished in second overall for the 400m in 56.02, followed by senior Ayo Adewole in fourth and junior Sydney Wells in ninth.
Senior Markesh Woodson kicked off his final indoor campaign in the black and gold with a win in the 60m dash, crossing in 6.68. He was followed by freshman Kahmari Montgomery in seventh, whose 6.89 crossing was good for the ninth spot on Mizzou's All-Time Top Ten for the event.
The 60m hurdles saw yet another explosive performance by a Tiger freshman, with Charles Graham, Jr., taking second in the field with the second-fastest time in school history – 7.99. Valerie Thames, who already holds an All-Time Top Ten mark for the outdoor season, added the 60m hurdles to her resume after finishing fourth in the competition in 8.64, the sixth-fastest time in Mizzou history.
Moving into the distance events, the women's mile was up first with junior Teylar Adelsberger continuing her stellar year with an event win. She overcame a conservative start, widening the gap with the rest of the field considerably to cross in 5:07.27.
A Tiger was first across the line for the women's 3000m run, as well, as Jamie Kempfer took charge of the field early on and finished nearly ten seconds ahead of the rest of the field in 10:08.25.
The Tigers now look forward to their first home meet of the season, as they prepare to host the Missouri Invitational on Friday, January 15, in the Hearnes Fieldhouse. For the latest on Mizzou Track & Feld, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on Twitter @MIZ_TrackField.
