Tigers collectively hit over .300 for the sixth time this season
BOONE, N.C. – Mizzou Volleyball improved to 8-0 this season following its 3-1 (25-19, 25-18, 23-25, 25-20) victory over Charlotte Saturday morning inside the Holmes Convocation Center. Junior Carly Kan (Honolulu, Hawaii) finished with 20-plus kills for the fifth time in Mizzou's eight matches this season.
"We came out strong this morning and bounced back nicely after dropping that third set," head coach Wayne Kreklow said. "I think we hit the ball very well today, including two sets with .400-plus hitting percentages. Our play at the net stood out as well, as we finished with double-digit blocks. We look forward to a great tournament finale against Liberty later today."
Mizzou recorded 62 kills on .357 hitting today against the 49ers. The Tigers had strong individual hitting numbers, including 15 kills on .583 hitting by redshirt sophomore Kira Larson (Fargo, N.D.) eight kills on .467 hitting from junior Emily Thater (Springfield, Mo.) and seven kills on .462 hitting by junior Julia Towler (Blue Springs, Mo.).
The Tigers were sharp in the opening set, tallying 20 kills on .486 hitting. Kan and Larson each produced five kills to lead Mizzou. A total of six Tigers accumulated more than two kills to form a balanced attack in the first set.
Mizzou used a 10-1 run midway through the second set to secure a 2-0 overall advantage. Larson tacked-on to her impressive start with six more kills on .667 hitting. The Tigers' defense also stepped up throughout the set, producing four total blocks at the net.
The match appeared to be in Mizzou's hands in third set action, but Charlotte reeled off six unanswered points to claim its first set of the morning. The Tigers exceeded a .400 hitting percentage again despite dropping the set to the 49ers.
Costly errors by Charlotte and strong defense by the Tigers were the story of the fourth set. Kan saved her best set for last, finishing with six kills on .385 hitting.
