Cedar Falls, Iowa - Mizzou Women's Basketball earned its first postseason WNIT win since 2003 on Thursday night with a 69-61 victory at the University of Northern Iowa. The Tigers improve to 18-13 overall with the win and advance to play Kansas State in the second round of the tournament. The Tigers' 18 wins so far this season are the most for a Mizzou team since the 2005-06 season when the Tigers finished with a 21-10 record overall.
Sophomore Jordan Frericks earned her 12th double-double of the season in the Tiger win as she tallied 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds on the night. Both Morgan Eye and Maddie Stock also made important contributions, both scoring in double-figures. Eye knocked down three triples and finished with 14 points overall, the most for the senior since she put up 16 points against Ole Miss on Feb. 5.
The Tigers and the Panthers both came ready for battle on this Thursday evening. Mizzou kicked things off with an early lead, but Northern Iowa soon took control and held on to the lead for almost 10 minutes of the half. The Tigers weren't ready to give up the fight, however, as Frericks contributed five straight points to put Mizzou in the lead. Both Stock sisters each contributed a triple in Mizzou's 11-2 first half run to help control the game. Mizzou limited UNI to just 25-percent shooting from distance in the first half, however both teams shot 33-percent from the floor before the midpoint break.
Northern Iowa fought back in the second half, tying things up about three minutes in. The Tigers, however, responded to each Panther bucket before going on a 12-3 run to pull ahead by 10 for their largest lead of the game. UNI snuck back up on the Tigers, eventually making it a three-point game, but the Tigers cleaned up on the glass to stay on top. Mizzou outrebounded Northern Iowa, 45-34 overall, and grabbed 15 offensive rebounds in the contest.
Mizzou will face Kansas State in the second round of the WNIT with the game date, time and location to be announced. Stay tuned to MUTigers.com for all the latest updates on Mizzou Women's Basketball. Fans can also follow the team on Twitter (@MizzouWBB) and Facebook (/MizzouWBB).
