COLUMBIA, Mo. - Head Coach Kim Anderson earned his first win at the helm of the Mizzou Men's Basketball program on Sunday as the Tigers (1-1) topped Valparaiso (1-1), 56-41, at Mizzou Arena. Sophomore guard Wes Clark (Detroit, Mich.) scored a career-high 16 points in the win in addition to controlling a season-high six rebounds.
Beyond Clark's performance, Mizzou was also powered by sophomore forward Johnathan Williams, III (Memphis, Tenn.), who scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. Junior forward Ryan Rosburg (Chesterfield, Mo.) led the Tigers with eight rebounds.
Quality time was logged in the post by freshman F D'Angelo Allen (Dallas, Texas), who followed up a steal, drive and layup attempt by freshman G Namon Wright (Los Angeles, Calif.) for a putback lay-in inside the final minute of the first half. The extra effort field goal represented Allen's first collegiate points and gave Mizzou a 24-23 lead at the half. Allen finished the game with four points (2-for-3 FG) and three rebounds.
Both teams made it to the double bonus with more than two minutes remaining in the opening half (2:37), with Mizzou taking advantage, sinking 10-of-12 from the charity stripe. The Crusaders cashed in on 7-of-12 foul shots in the first half.
The Tigers got off to an excellent start in the second half with a 10-0 run from 16:15 to 11:07. A dunk from senior F Keanau Post (Victoria, British Columbia) was the final points of the run, putting the Tigers up 37-27 at 12:14. Mizzou held Valpo scoreless for almost eight minutes in the half. The Tigers capitalized on Valpo's mistakes, scoring 17 points off 14 Crusader turnovers.
Despite the Tiger run, Clark subbed back into action with just under eight minutes to go. He promptly buried a triple attempt to put the Tigers up by 10 (44-34) and give the team some momentum. Clark finished the game hitting 2-of-3 from 3-point range.
Mizzou's defensive effort was evident in the second half, as the Tigers held the Crusaders to just 18 points on 7-of-25 shooting from the field. On the opposite end of the floor, Mizzou closed out the game hitting 14-of-26 shots in the second half (53.8 percent), scoring 32 points.
Anderson's squad is back in action in Mizzou Arena against Oral Roberts on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. on SEC Network+.
