Mizzou Surrenders One Run in Doubleheader Sweep

Sept. 27, 2013

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou Softball team continued its fall schedule Friday at University Field, taking a pair of victories in strong showings against Lake Land College (Mattoon, Ill.). The Tigers surrendered three hits and one run over both games, winning the opening contest, 5-0, and the second game, 10-1.

Mizzou was pitched to victory in the initial game by freshman Tori Finucane (Germantown, M.D.), who recorded seven strikeouts and allowed zero hits in 5.0 innings of work. Senior Alora Marble relieved Finucane in the sixth inning, notching two strikeouts of her own while keeping Lake Land hitless over the final 2.0 innings.

Junior 1B Kelsea Roth (Yorba Linda, Calif.) provided the opening scoring of the first game, hitting a two-run double to deep center field to score Mizzou's first runs. Freshman IF/OF Natalie Fleming (Silex, Mo.) also doubled in the win. Sophomore SS Sami Fagan was smooth on the base paths, stealing two bases..

Freshman pitcher Casey Stangel took the circle in the second contest and immediately showed her batting prowess, launching a two-run home run down the right field line in her first at-bat. Stangel also homered on Sept. 27 against Columbia College.

Three Tigers finished with 3-for-4 batting performances in the second game, as junior 3B Angela Randazzo (Poway, Calif.), senior OF Mackenzie Sykes (Blue Springs, Mo.) and sophomore OF Taylor Gadbois (Maryville, Mo.) had stout days at the plate. One of Randazzo's three hits was a double.

Gadbois also picked up two steals, which were among a strong six-steal second game for Mizzou.

Stangel batted 2-for-4 with her two RBI, with sophomore 2B/OF Emily Crane (Troy, Mo.) also hitting 2-for-4. The freshman hurler threw 5.0 innings of one-hit ball with four strikeouts before Marble entered in relief again for the final 2.0 innings.

Mizzou returns to University Field for more "Fall Ball" action on Friday, Oct. 4. Head coach Ehren Earleywine's squad hosts Crowder College at 2 p.m. and Butler Community College at 4 p.m. The Tigers play as the visiting team during the fall.
