MINNEAPOLIS, Mn. – It was a cold and wet afternoon in Minneapolis, MN, as the Tigers took on their first big test of the season at the Roy Griak Invitational. The men walked away with a ninth-place finish overall against a tough field that included six nationally ranked teams. The women placed 14th among ten nationally ranked teams.
The men kicked off the day for the Tigers with their first 8k of the season. The Tigers had a strong start on the rolling course with the leaders keeping pace with the front pack. In the end it was sophomore Tyler Schneider who led the way for the black and gold, crossing with a final time of 25:05 to take 35th overall.
Not far behind Schneider was freshman TJ Carey in his Tiger debut, placing 40th in 25:10. Next up were a pair of sophomores in Evan Chiplock (46th) and Kenny Cushing (63rd), crossing in 25:14 and 25:27, respectively. Rounding out the top five for Mizzou was junior Sam Dickerson who finished just behind Cushing for 64th.
Next up was the women's 6k, and the Tigers well in the stacked field beating out nationally ranked Weber State, and fellow Midwest Regional competitors South Dakota, Iowa, South Dakota State, Nebraska, Drake, and Creighton. Freshman Kaitlyn Fischer once again led the way for the women, coming through strong in her debut 6k to finish 32nd overall in 21:46.
Next up for the Tigers was the tight pack of junior Courtney Brown, sophomore Sam Garrett, freshman Kayla Wolf, and junior Courtney Wood to round out the top five. Brown crossed in 22:40 to take 98th, Garrett was three seconds off her PR with a 22:40 finish for 99th, Wolf had her debut 6k in 22:48 for 108th, and Wood hit 22:50 for 110th.
