Ames, Iowa -
University of Missouri's seventeenth-ranked wrestling team lost to No. 2 Iowa State by a 28-10 score Sunday at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa. Missouri fell to 7-7 with the loss while the second-ranked Cyclones improved to 12-2 on the season.
Beginning at 149 pounds, Iowa State's No. 10 ranked Mitch Mueller put the Cyclones on the board first with a 20-7 major decision over Tiger Scott O'Donnell (Kansas City, Mo.). The Cyclones took the following three matches, including a victory by No. 2 Jon Reader over No. 5 Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.), who carried an undefeated dual record into the meet. At 184 pounds, Cyclone Duke Burk handed No. 16 Dorian Henderson (Columbus, Ga.) a defeat by fall in overtime to give Iowa State a 17-0 lead.
Senior Max Askren (Hartland, Wisc.), ranked No. 3 nationally for Missouri at 184 pounds, quickly took control of No. 11 Jerome Ward of ISU by posting a 9-1 major decision, giving the Tigers their first team points of the afternoon.
Iowa State's top-ranked senior Jake Varner extended the Cyclone lead to 21-4, as he posted a 14-5 major decision over No. 13 Brent Haynes (Kansas City, Mo.) at 197 pounds.
Fourth-ranked Cyclone David Zabriskie then took down No. 5 Mark Ellis (Peculiar, Mo.), to give Iowa State a 24-4 team lead. Zabriskie and Ellis have met five times previously, with Zabriskie now owning the series, 6-0. Ellis is now 7-2 in duals with his only other loss coming to Oklahoma State's top-ranked Jared Rosholt.
Returning to the top of the lineup, freshman Eric Wilson (Centennial, Colo.) rebounded from two losses last weekend to take his first conference win, with a 6-3 decision over Iowa State's Trevor Dearden, improving to 12-10 overall and 3-4 in duals. Giving Missouri just their second victory of the afternoon, the team score was 24-7 entering the final two matches.
After redshirt freshman Nathan McCormick (Leawood, Kan.) dropped a 12-3 major decision at 133 pounds to eighth-ranked Nick Fanthorpe, junior Todd Schavrien (Poway, Calif.) took to the mat at 141 pounds in the last match of the afternoon. No. 16 Schavrien bested his opponent, Dalton Jensen by a 5-1 decision, giving the Tigers three points and ending the dual 28-10. Schavrien improves to 23-9 on the season, and 2-2 in conference duals.
