Missouri vs. Baylor Quotes
MU Head Coach Cindy Stein:
Opening Statement:
"It feels good to get a win. I was very pleased with our effort today. Our kids have been working really hard in practice and they came in today with a lot of energy. That extra work paid off and allowed some of our players to get their shots back. I think they did a really good job of controlling the tempo of the game, and that put us in a really good position down the stretch. Everybody came in and did something well for us. Getting help off the bench makes for a really good afternoon."
On guarding Baylor center Brittney Griner:
"I think we did a great job on Griner. Obviously, she creates a huge presence out there and is really tough to guard. I thought we did a good job defending her with Jessra [Johnson], Shakara [Jones] and Christine [Flores]. I felt like we were able to keep her as far away from the basket as possible. Beating her down the floor and taking the ball at her on offense allowed our players to build their confidence. We've really worked on post play and looking to get past the defender. We've got some length ourselves, and our players can make good one-on-one moves themselves."
On how the team responded after a tough start:
"For the first four minutes, it seemed like we didn't know how to shoot well. Once we got over that, we could develop a rhythm to play better. We each had some foul situations, and I think it helped us to get our confidence up."
On commanding the pace of the game:
"We did a much better job this game of controlling the tempo. I felt like we were going to win all day, and even in practice, it felt like we were doing all the right things we needed to do. I felt like that against OU and KU as well, and this time we were able to come through and close out the game."
On MU's experience:
"I think our experience has helped us a lot, and now our confidence is finally coming out. It's good to get one win, but we know we need to do more. Every possession is a fight in this league, and that shows how good our conference is."
On the team's preparation for the game:
"We worked on the same things that didn't work in the Oklahoma game. It was important for us to keep her away from the basket. [Griner] is only a freshman, but you still have to respect her game. After the OU game, we all worked in practice, and it paid off."
On responding after falling behind 10-0 in the first half:
"We know we need to keep playing. We fought back, and that's what a good team does."
