
No. 13 Oklahoma Stuns Mizzou, 62-61

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Amanda Thompson made a jumper with nine seconds left and the Tigers missed a game-winning shot as the No. 13 Oklahoma Sooners earned a 62-61 win over the Missouri Tigers Wednesday night at Mizzou Arena. The Tigers fall to 10-7 overall and 0-4 in Big 12 Conference play while the Sooners improve to 13-4 and 3-1.
Mizzou took a 61-60 lead when senior Jessra Johnson hit a jumper with 1:09 remaining in the game. Both teams missed shots in the final minute until Thompson grabbed an offensive rebound and hit the putback with 9.6 seconds on the clock for a 62-61 Sooner advantage. Senior Toy Richbow raced down the court and found Johnson, whose three-point attempt fell short as Oklahoma held on for the victory.
Johnson led four Tigers in double figures with 18 points and seven rebounds. Junior Shakara Jones chipped in 13 points while classmate RaeShara Brown posted 12 points, five assists and five steals. Sophomore Christine Flores added 11 points.
The Sooners took an early 10-6 lead after Nyeshia Stevenson hit a layup four minutes into the game but the Tigers responded with strong inside play to knot the contest at 14-14 with 13:07 on the clock after Johnson, Flores and Jones all converted layups.
Both teams traded baskets over the next several minutes until Brown nailed a three to give Mizzou a 22-19 advantage with 7:22 remaining in the first half. Oklahoma responded with a jumper from Thompson but Missouri reeled eight straight points, including five from Jones, for a 30-21 Tiger lead with 4:51 left in the frame.
Oklahoma used a free throw and a basket from Thompson to cut Mizzou's lead to 30-25 at the half.
The Sooners stormed out of the break on a 10-2 run and took a 35-32 lead after Stevenson hit a trey three minutes into the second half. Oklahoma eventually increased its lead to six, 41-35, when Thompson hit a jumper with 14:36 remaining in the contest.
With the Tigers trailing 52-47, Mizzou hit eight straights free throws, including six from Brown, as the team used an 8-2 run to gain a 55-54 advantage with 6:18 on the clock. The lead continued to go back and forth over the next few minutes, with Richbow making two baskets for a 59-58 Missouri advantage with 2:33 left.
The Tigers next hit the court as the team hosts No. 10 Baylor on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m. Mizzou then travels to No. 12 Oklahoma State for a 7 p.m. contest on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
