Kansas Drops Mizzou, 72-59

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Despite outscoring Kansas 41-26 in the second half, the University of Missouri women's basketball team suffered a 72-59 loss to the Jayhawks Sunday afternoon in Lawrence, Kan. The Tigers fell to 10-6 overall and 0-3 in Big 12 Conference action with the loss.
Junior RaeShara Brown paced the Tigers with 15 points and three steals while senior Amanda Hanneman joined her in double figures with 12 points. Senior Toy Richbow dished out a game high five assists.
With the Tigers trailing 5-4 after a Brown steal and a Jones layup, the Jayhawks reeled off 12 consecutive points for a 17-4 game with 13:43 remaining in the first half. A layup from senior Toy Richbow ended Kansas' run and the two teams traded baskets over the next few minutes for a 22-10 KU lead with 10:14 on the clock.
The Jayhawks continued to extend their lead with a 12-2 run over the next two minutes as the home squad held a 34-12 with just over eight minutes left in the first.
After a layup from sophomore Christine Flores for a 38-16 game, Kansas scored the next eight points before sophomore Bailey Gee hit a jumper with 26 seconds on the clock to close out first half scoring. The Jayhawks entered the break up 46-18.
Two free throws by Kansas gave the team a 31 point advantage, 57-26, with 14:20 remaining but the Tigers responded with a 15-0 run over the next four minutes for a 57-41 game with 10:40 left. Hanneman started the run with consecutive threes, followed by layups from Brown, Johnson and Jones and a trey from Brown.
Four three throws by KU's Sade Morris upped Mizzou's deficit back to 20, 61-41, but a three-pointer from junior Jasmyn Otote, two freebies from Brown and a long jumper from Hanneman as the shot clock expired brought the Tigers within 13, 61-48, with 5:41 on the clock.
Kansas answered with another basket but Hanneman nailed a jumper and Johnson converted a three-point play to cut the Tigers' deficit to 12, 65-53, with 4:15 left. Danielle McCray responded for the Jayhawks with a trey 20 seconds later and the teams traded baskets over the remaining minutes for a 72-59 final.
The Tigers return home for a pair of games next week. First Missouri welcomes No. 13 Oklahoma to Mizzou Arena for a 6:30 p.m. game on Wednesday, Jan. 20. The Tigers next hit the court as the team hosts No. 9 Baylor on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m.
