Third Place and Championship Rounds
Lincoln, Neb. – The fifth-ranked Missouri wrestling team finished third with 55 points behind co-Big 12 Champions Iowa State and Nebraska (70 points), with Tigers Marcus Hoehn (Farmington, Mo.) and Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) capturing individual titles at 141 and 165 pounds, respectively. By the end of the day, Missouri had three second place finishers, two third place finishers, and three wrestlers that took fifth.
Hoehn started off his post season with a bang, earning his first career Big 12 title in his second conference championships appearance. Pairing with Iowa State's Nick Gallick for the fourth time of the season, Missouri's 141-pounder took the one point lead on an escape in the second period and was hit with stalling shortly thereafter. Gallick chose down to start the third period and escaped in 33 seconds. Knotted at one, the match was the first of night to head into sudden victory. Neither grappler was able to capitalize on a shot in the one minute sudden victory period, and the two moved into the first of two 30 second tie breakers. Gallick was down first and rode Hoehn out. Quick to his feet, Hoehn worked up and escaped in 14 seconds in the second tie breaker period, earning the 141 pound title, Missouri's first ever at that weight class.
“This is an amazing feeling,” Hoehn said. “I knew when I was out there wrestling that I wanted it more than him. I envisioned our Big 12 Champions plaque on the wall in our wrestling room and I wanted my name on it. I didn't want to be just another guy that advanced to the finals. I wanted to be the guy that won it.”
Making his second appearance in the 157 pound finals, senior Michael Chandler (High Ridge, Mo.) was forced to settle for silver after falling to third-ranked Jordan Burroughs, 6-4.
Next to the mat, returning Marable became Missouri's fifth wrestler in program history to win two league titles, capturing the crown at 165 pounds. Wrestling hometown favorite Stephen Dwyer of Nebraska, Marable was able to ignore the cheers of the Husker heavy crowd and beat Dwyer, 3-1, in sudden victory. Marable improves to 4-0 all time against Dwyer with each win against the Husker determined by two or fewer points.
“Marable wrestled today like he was wrestling at the end of last season,” Missouri Head Coach Brian Smith said. “He looked tough and that's good going into Nationals.”
Senior Raymond Jordan (New Bern, N.C.) lost a two point decision, 3-1, to Brandon Browne of Nebraska at 174 pounds. Browne scored the match winning point in the third period with a takedown at the buzzer.
Wrestling to the cheers of 3,073 fans, second-ranked Mark Ellis lost a heart-breaker to No. 1 David Zabriskie of Iowa State. Ellis' lost assisted in the tie between host school Nebraska and now three-time Big 12 Champion Iowa State. Fans of all different wrestling programs were chanting MIZ-ZOU to show their support of the Tiger grappler.
Scoreless through the first period, Ellis escaped after choosing down to start the second, but gave up a takedown with one second left in the period. Zabriskie escaped in the third to collect the win.
"We were upset about the losses today but they're correctable mistakes," Smith said. "We have a solid group of wrestlers that have qualified for Nationals and six of the seven should be seeded among the top eight. We definitely have a chance to bring home some hardware from Nationals."
Earlier in the afternoon 133 pounder Todd Schavrien and 197 pounder Maxwell Askren took third in their respective weight classes.
A total of seven Missouri grapplers (Schavrien, Hoehn, Chandler, Marable, Jordan, Askren and Ellis) have automatically qualified for the 2009 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, tying for the program's second highest total set in 2003 and again in 2006. An additional 52 wrestlers from across the country will receive at-large bids that will be announced on Wednesday, March 11. The 79th annual Division I Wrestling Championships will run March 19-21, at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 1-800-CAT-PAWS.
