COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Missouri women's basketball team has four players in double figures as the squad picked up an 80-59 victory over Central Missouri in exhibition action Sunday afternoon at Mizzou Arena.
Senior Amanda Hanneman led the Tigers with 20 points, including 18 in the first half, and junior Shakara Jones added 16 points and three assists. Sophomore forwards Kendra Frazier and BreAnna Brock also scored in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Seniors Toy Richbow and Marissa Scott and junior RaeShara Brown all pulled down a team high six rebounds.
Missouri started the game on a mini 6-0 run as Brown, Jones and Hanneman all scored two points during the stretch. The score stayed close until Hanneman sank a three-point basket to give the Tigers a 15-10 advantage with 9:41 on the clock.
After UCM's Taylor Hanson tied the game at 17-17, the Tigers responded with an 8-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Hanneman to give Missouri a 25-17 lead with 4:45 remaining in the first half.
Mizzou stayed hot offensively as Hanneman nailed a jumper and a layup, sophomore BreAnna Brock hit two layups and junior Jasmyn Otote also converted a layup for a 40-23 Tiger advantage with 59 seconds left. A three Otote from closed out first half scoring to give the Tigers a 40-23 lead at the break.
Missouri shot an impressive 59.3 percent in the opening 20 minutes, led by Hanneman's 7-of-8 from the floor, and closed out the half on a 23-6 run.
Jones got the Tigers off to a good start in the second half with seven points as the squad opened their biggest lead of the game, 50-23, at the 16:21 mark. The Jennies did not back down and ran off a 12-2 run of their own over the next 4:15 to cut Missouri's lead to 52-39 with 12:06 remaining in the contest. The Tigers went back up by 16, 55-39 when Jones nailed a three-pointer with 11:43 left on the clock. A layup by Central Missouri's Meghan Waggoner that cut the lead down to 14, but Mizzou charged ahead with five straight points for a 62-43 advantage with 6:55 remaining.
Missouri kept the Jennies at bay for the remainder of the game, led by Frazier's 10 points in the last four minutes.
The Tigers officially open the 2009-10 campaign on Sunday, Nov. 15 at home against Northern Iowa at 5 p.m. Mizzou then returns to the court as they host Memphis at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18.
