KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Sophomore Amanda Hanneman hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 15 seconds left in regulation and junior Alyssa Hollins scored 10 of her 19 points in overtime as the Missouri women's basketball team upset No. 13/11 Oklahoma 70-64 in the first round of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship Tuesday afternoon. The win marked the first time in Big 12 history a 12-seed upset a five-seed in the tournament.
Down 53-50, Hanneman nailed a three off a feed from Hollins and the Tigers held on to send the game into overtime. In the overtime session, Hollins scored eight-consecutive Missouri points and Mizzou went up six, 63-57, when sophomore Jessra Johnson hit two free throws with 1:51 left.
Clinging to a 65-62 lead with just 20 seconds on the clock, the Tigers hit 5-of-6 free throws to hold on for the 70-64 win.
Missouri had four players score in double figures for only the second time this year, led by Johnson, who recorded her sixth double-double of the year with ¬¬¬16 points and 14 rebounds, and Hollins, who scored a team high 19. Freshman Shakara Jones had added 16, Hanneman scored 13 on 5-of-6 shooting from floor and sophomore Toy Richbow pulled down seven rebounds to go with a career high-tying five steals and four assists.
After the Sooners went on a 7-0 run to open a 13-8 advantage, the Tigers bounced back to tie the contest at 13-13 with 6:57 left on the clock when Hollins sank a three. Another Missouri 3-pointer, this time from sophomore Jessra Johnson, gave Mizzou its biggest lead of the half, 21-17, with 4:29 remaining in the frame.
The Sooners closed the half with another 7-0 run, capped when Danielle Robinson hit one-of-two free throws with 31.3 seconds remaining, to send Oklahoma up 24-21 at the half.
Johnson put Mizzou up 31-30 with 16:53 left in the game after driving down the lane, hitting the layup and converting the ensuring free throw to cap a 7-0 Tiger run. The Sooners momentarily reclaimed the lead with a Courtney Paris basket but Hanneman hit a 3-pointer and a jumper and freshman RaeShara Brown found a streaking Jones for a layup to put the Tigers back on top, 38-34, with 13:39 remaining.
Down 44-40, the Tigers roared back to take a two-point advantage, 46-44, after Johnson sank a three with 7:12 left. The lead continued to seesaw back and forth until Hanneman hit her three to send the contest into overtime.
With its seven 3-pointers in the game, Missouri set a new single-season record with 193 threes in a season, passing the record of 192 set in 2000-01.
The Tigers will next face No. 11/12 and four-seed Texas A&M at 2:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Phillips 66 big 12 Championship.
