COLUMBIA, Mo. - Junior Alyssa Hollins netted 27 points, including 22 in the second half, to propel the Missouri women's basketball team to a 62-59 win over Kansas on Senior Day at Mizzou Arena on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Tigers improve to 9-17 overall and 2-11 in Big 12 play while the Jayhawks fall to 15-11 and 4-9.
Up by just two, 57-55, with 1:04 left in the game, Missouri sophomore Toy Richbow hit a 3-pointer from the corner to give the Tigers a five-point advantage. A jumper from Nicollette Smith 14 seconds later made it a one possession game but Hollins sank two free throws with 19 seconds on the clock to put Mizzou back up five, 62-57. Jayhawk LaChelda Jacobs made a layup with just three seconds remaining to make the final score 62-59.
"I'm really proud of this team," Missouri Head Coach Cindy Stein said. "I felt like as a unit this was our best defensive game. We obviously had some outstanding performances and had a lot of kids chip in. I thought we played with a lot of energy. When we play with that energy I think we're pretty good."
Down six, 30-24, the Tigers kicked off an 8-0 run when freshman Shakara Jones found sophomore Amanda Hanneman for a basket with 3:15 left in the first half. A three from Hanneman brought Mizzou within two and Jones converted a fast break layup to give Missouri a 31-30 lead at the 1:53 mark. A jumper from Hollins rimmed out as time expired to send the Tigers into the break with a one-point advantage.
Missouri opened the second half with 3-pointers from Hollins and sophomore Jessra Johnson to build a seven-point lead, 37-30, with 18:29 remaining in the game. Another three from Hollins at the 14:01 mark and a baseline jumper from junior K-Kay Pickens 30 seconds later gave the Tigers its first double digit lead of the game, 43-32.
After the Jayhawks got within five, 45-40, on a three from Danielle McCray, Hollins received an inbounds pass with three seconds left and nailed her fourth try of the game as the shot clock expired for a 48-40 advantage with 10:49 remaining.
Kansas inched its way back into the game and cut Missouri's lead to three, 52-49, when Sade Morris hit a 3-pointer with 6:10 left in the contest.
Hollins, whose 27 points were one shy of her career high, made four 3-pointers for the second consecutive game. Johnson joined Hollins in double figures with 12 points, Pickens pulled down a career high seven rebounds and Richbow tied her personal best with seven assists.
Prior to the contest, Mizzou honored senior Nicole Wilson for her contributions to the basketball program.
Mizzou closes out the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday, Feb. 27 with a 6:30 p.m. game with Iowa State. The game will be broadcast in Missouri on FSN Midwest. The Tigers play their final two regular season games on the road against Kansas State and Colorado on Saturday, March 1 and Wednesday, March 5, respectively.
