
Iowa State Slips Past Mizzou, 58-54

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Junior Alyssa Hollins missed a go-ahead 3-pointer with six seconds remaining and Iowa State made two free throws in the closing seconds to seal a 58-54 Cyclone victory over the Missouri women's basketball team on Wednesday night at Mizzou Arena. With the loss, Missouri falls to 9-18 overall and 2-12 in Big play action while Iowa State improves its mark to 17-10 overall and 6-8 in league action.
The Tigers lead 52-50 with 4:05 left in the contest but Iowa State scored five consecutive points on a layup from Jocelyn Anderson and a three from Alison Lacey for a 55-52 Cyclone advantage. Hollins converted two free throws with 19 seconds on the clock but was not able to hit the go-ahead three after Iowa State hit one-of-two from the free throw line.
The Tigers, who committed a season low seven turnovers, were led by Hollins' 17 points on the strength of five 3-pointers. Sophomore Jessra Johnson scored 15 and pulled down a team high seven boards.
Sharpshooting from behind the arc kept Mizzou in the game in the first 20 minutes of play, as the squad hit 6-of-12 shots from 3-point land. The Tigers build a 9-5 lead on 3-pointers from Hollins, Johnson and sophomore Toy Richbow.
Iowa State came back and tied to contest at 14-14 with 8:57 left in the first frame when Genesis Lightbourne hit a jumper and used a 9-5 run over the next 6:15 to go ahead 23-19, at the 2:42 mark. A layup from Johnson 19 seconds later got Missouri within two, 23-21, and Hollins nailed a three with five seconds left in the half to send the Tigers into the break with a 24-23 lead.
The Cyclones opened the second frame with a 7-2 run for a 30-26 Iowa State advantage with 17:38 remaining. Four straight points from Johnson on a layup and two free throws made the game 40-40 exactly one minute later.
A 3-pointer from Cyclone Heather Ezell put the visitor's up seven, 47-40, with 8:43 left in the contest but the Tigers responded with a 7-0 run, capped by a three from sophomore Amanda Hanneman, to tie the game at 47-47 at the 6:41 mark.
Freshman Shakara Jones hit a jumper 30 seconds later to give the Tigers a 49-47 advantage. Iowa State retook the lead with three free throws put Hollins made her fifth 3-pointer of the game with just over four minutes remaining in the game to give Mizzou a 52-50 lead.
Mizzou finishes the regular season with two consecutive road contests, starting with a game in Manhattan, Kan., against Kansas State on Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m. The Tigers then face Colorado in Boulder, Colo., on Wednesday, March 5 at 8 p.m. CT.
