CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Missouri women's basketball team went on a 12-0 run over the last 4:56 of the game to pick up a 55-50 comeback win over Delaware State in the consolation contest of the Marriott Cavalier Classic on Saturday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va.
Down 50-43 with just over five minutes left in the game, sophomore forward Amanda Hanneman nailed a 3-pointer with 4:56 remaining to spark Mizzou's comeback. Sophomore forward Jessra Johnson then hit a basket and three free throws to give the Tigers a 51-50 lead at the 1:10 mark, the squad's first since they led 15-14 with 10:41 left in the first half.
Johnson then fed freshman forward Shakara Jones for a layup with 25.4 seconds remaining to go up 53-50. Down only three, the Hornets had a chance to tie the game in the waning seconds but Katreem Palmer missed a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left and Hanneman gathered the loose rebound and hit her two free throws after getting fouled.
Johnson led Missouri with 20 points, including 14 in the second half and Hanneman and Jones each notched 14. Hanneman, who scored in double figures for the fourth consecutive game, also recorded a career high five steals.
The two teams stayed close from the opening tip, with the squads trading baskets in the first minute. Delaware State took a 17-15 advantage with 10:18 remaining in the half when Selena Galloway nailed a 3-pointer.
Mizzou came back and tied the contest at 23-23 off a free throw from sophomore Jessra Johnson at the 4:27 mark but the Hornets ran off a 7-2 run to end the first half, capped by a fading jumper by Brittany Washington with one second left to give Delaware State a 30-25 lead.
The Tigers scored the first four points of the second half to cut the Hornets lead to one, 30-29, with 18:12 left in the game. Delaware State responded with an 8-2 run to go up 38-31 with 12:38 on the clock.
After a week and a half layoff, the Tigers return to the court on Jan. 9 in the Big 12 Conference opener at 6:30 p.m. against Colorado at Mizzou Arena. Mizzou then faces Texas Tech on Jan. 12 at 6:30 p.m., also at Mizzou Arena.
