
Jones' Jumper Gives Mizzou 75-73 Overtime Win Over UMKC

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Freshman Shakara Jones grabbed an offensive rebound and made a put back with 6.1 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Missouri women's basketball team a 75-73 overtime victory over UMKC at Mizzou Arena on Saturday afternoon. Mizzou (6-4), which scored the first 18 points of the game, led by as many as 21 early in the second half before UMKC (5-6) tied the game after Tarah Cullen made three free throws with 1.1 seconds left in regulation.
With the score tied at 73-73 after UMKC's Sierra Radke hit a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left in overtime, junior Alyssa Hollins drove to the basket but missed a layup. Jones, positioned right in front of the basket, snagged the rebound and made a two-foot jumper with 6.1 seconds remaining. The Kangaroos inbounded the ball at midcourt with three seconds on the clock after calling a timeout but could not get off a shot to give the Tigers the vicory.
Down by 21 with 18:02 left in regulation, UMKC chipped away at Mizzou's lead and got within nine with Chazny Morris made a 3-pointer while being fouled and converted the ensuing free throw for a 53-44 Mizzou lead with 6:40 left in the game. After the Tigers went back up by 13 the Kangaroos ran off a 9-0 run to cut the Missouri lead to 62-58 with 35 seconds left.
UMKC's Brittny Piconni nailed a three to cut the Tigers' lead to one, 65-64, with nine seconds on the clock but Mizzou went back up by three when Jones made two free throws with seven seconds remaining. Cullen then sank her three free throws with 1.1 seconds left after Jones was whistled for a foul.
The Kangaroos earned their first lead of the game, 70-67, when Sarah Stewart made a 3-pointer with 3:20 remaining in overtime but Johnson scored six consecutive points to put Mizzou back on top 73-70 at the 1:11 mark. Radke then tied the game with a three before Jones made the game-winning shot.
Hollins opened scoring with a jumper one minute into the game to start an 18-0 Mizzou run over the next 6:30 to take a commanding lead with 12:29 left in the first half. UMKC finally got on the board at the 11:03 mark and eventually entered the break down 38-20.
Mizzou had four players in double figures for the first time this season, led by Hollins' 21. Johnson posted 20, Jones notched her third double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds and sophomore Amanda Hanneman added 10 points.
The Tigers return to the court on Wednesday, Dec. 19 with a tilt against Illinois at 6:30 p.m. The contest will be televised on KZOU in Columbia and MetroSports in the Kansas City area. Mizzou then travels to Charlottesville, Va., to compete in the Marriott Cavalier Classic with Delaware State, Marshall and host Virginia Dec. 28-29.
