Tulsa, Okla. - Five University of Missouri women's tennis players wrapped up play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Regional Tournament Friday (Oct. 19) in Tulsa, Okla. Highlighting the action, Tiger freshman Mallory Weber advanced to the Round of 32 and fellow freshman Maureen Modesto qualified for the main singles draw.
"For a young team, I'm very proud of our effort," Tiger Head Coach Blake Starkey said, after Mizzou finished up play Friday. The event was the last for Mizzou in the fall, and they will now prepare for the spring season, which starts Jan. 26, in Fayetteville, Ark., as they face the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks, who sent five singles players to the Round of 16 in this week's ITA Tournament.
In singles action, Weber defeated one of New Mexico State's best singles players, Jelja Juriek, 7-6 (4), 6-3, in the Round of 64 Thursday (Oct. 18). Weber took the second set comfortably after winning the first set by taking the tiebreaker, 7-4.
Weber then advanced to play Arkansas' Nanar Airpetian in the Round of 32 Friday (Oct. 19). Airpetian defeated Weber, 6-2, 6-2.
In other singles action, Maureen Modesto won two matches; defeating Erin Monson of Utah, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8, in the Round of 64 in the Qualifying draw, and taking a 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 victory against Kansas State's Anteah Huljev in the Round of 32 of the same draw. Arkansas' Aurelija Misevcuite defeated Modesto, 6-0, 6-1, in the Round of 64 of the Main Draw Thursday (Oct. 18).
Tiger freshman Kaitlyn Ritchie defeated Oklahoma State's Betina Cabbe, 7-6, 5-7, 12-10, in the Round of 64 in the Qualifying Draw Wednesday (Oct. 17). In the Round of 32, however, Maria Kalashnikova of Oklahoma defeated Ritchie, 6-1, 6-3.
Tiger senior Chrissy Svetlic and junior Raquel Wagner each lost their Round of 64 match in the Qualifying Draw Wednesday (Oct. 17).
In doubles action, the Tigers lost both matches, at the Regionals, as Oklahoma's duo of Christi Baxley and Tara Eckel took an 8-1 victory over Modesto and Wagner in the Round of 64. Svetlic and Weber earned a bye in the first round, and played Franzi Jendrian and Monica Milewski from Colorado in the Round of 32. Jendrian and Milewski defeated the Mizzou duo, 8-5.
