Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri women's tennis team completed the second day of the Mizzou Invitational, along with Drake, Illinois State, Iowa State, Murray State and Saint Louis. All of the day's matches were played inside the Green Tennis Center because of lightning and heavy rain in Columbia.

The new Tiger duo of senior Chrissy Svetlic and freshman Mallory Weber created the most excitement at the GTC, as they won two matches to advance to the finals, which will be held Sunday.

The day started off with an exciting second round doubles match between the MU duo and the tournament's No. 1 seed, Saint Louis' Amanda Hellberg and Tara Grant. Hellberg and Grant took an early 2-1 lead, but Weber served to win the fourth game. The Tiger duo then broke Hellberg's serve to go up, 3-2. After winning the sixth game to lead, 4-2, Svetlic and Weber worked together in the next game to increase their lead. At game point, Svetlic made a great shot at the net, which was returned by a SLU player deep into the near side. Weber sent the ball back to the net, where it skipped over and dropped into SLU's court, giving the Mizzou duo a 5-2 lead. Weber hit a similar shot to help MU win the eighth game, giving the Tigers a 6-2 lead, which would eventually turn into an 8-3 win.

The win sent them to the semifinals, where they defeated Saint Louis duo Joe Becker and Hailee Elmore, also by an 8-3 score.

In other doubles action for Mizzou; the Tiger duo of Raquel Wagner and Maureen Modesto fell to Miller and Parke-Bedard from Illinois State, 8-3, in the second round of the A draw.

The Tiger duo of Kaitlyn Ritchie and Kaitlin Dunham defeated SLU's McCullagh and McKenna, 8-0, in the quarterfinals of the B doubles flight.

In the B draw, Maureen Modesto defeated Iowa State's Chrissy Derouin, 6-1, 6-3, to move to the finals of the B draw. She will face Svetlic in the final Sunday. Svetlic defeated Wagner, 6-3, 6-3, in the semifinal match between teammates.

Dunham and Weber each won their matches in consolation play of the A draw.

Play will continue Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Green Tennis Center, with exciting finals action in all draws.
