Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri Women's Tennis team opened competition at the 2007 Mizzou Invitational by securing 10 singles-match wins and two more doubles victories to open a strong weekend of action at the Green Tennis Center in Columbia, Mo.
The three-day event opened at 9:30 a.m. on Friday and will continue through Sunday afternoon, with action beginning each morning at 9:30 a.m. Six teams are competing at the 2007 Mizzou Invitational. In addition to the Tigers, fellow Big 12 foe Iowa State, Illinois State, Saint Louis, Drake and Murray State will also square-off at the Tennis Center.
In Flight A singles the Tigers got wins from Mallory Weber 6-1, 6-1 over Anne Penington of Murray State, a hard-fought 6-4, 0-6, 10-7 Katilyn Dunham victory over Iowa State's Liza Wischer and a dominating 6-1, 6-0 Katilyn Ritchie win over Saint Louis' Tara Grant.
Flight B saw the Tigers earn six more wins, including an impressive 6-1, 6-1 win by No. 1 singles performer Maureen Modesto over Joe Becker of Saint Louis. Chrissy Svetlic and Raquel Wagner each recorded a pair of wins in Flight B competition.
Sofia Ayala concluded a strong singles round with a pair of wins in Flight C, including a 7-5, 6-2 win over Carmen Peters of Illinois State.
Action at the 2007 Mizzou Invitational continues on Saturday (Oct. 13) with a pair of doubles rounds and one singles round. Play will begin at 9:30 a.m.
