Tigers Successful at Drake Invitational

Des Moines, Iowa - The Missouri Women's Tennis Team has had an exciting and solid run at the Drake Invitational. Mallory Weber, a true freshman on the Missouri women's tennis team, advanced to the finals of the "A" Flight Singles bracket. Maureen Modesto, also a true freshman, has advanced to the finals of the "B" Flight singles bracket. And Mallory Weber and Kaitlyn Ritchie (also a true freshman) have advanced to the finals of the doubles draw.

In the "A" singles draw, Weber first defeated Sampada Kanade of Iowa. In the quarterfinals, Weber then took out Nebraska's Amber Chandronnait 6-2, 6-3. In the semi-finals, Weber easily defeated Nebraska's Ashley Finnegan 6-4, 6-0. Tomorrow, she could claim the tournament title with a victory over Stephanie Evans.

In the "B" singles draw, fellow freshman Maureen Modesto first defeated Nebraska's Marianne Cicmanec. In the quarterfinals, she defeated Iowa State's Rika Kelemen 6-3, 6-2. In the semi-finals, Modesto defeated Iowa State's Liza Wischer 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. She could claim the tournament for the Tigers with a victory tomorrow in the finals over Iowa State's Erin Karonis.

After falling in the first round, Kaitlin Dunham has advaced to the finals of the "A" singles draw. In the finals, she will face fellow teammate and doubles partner Sofia Ayala, who after falling in the first round has also won two matches to reach the finals.

In doubles, the Tigers were guaranteed a spot in the finals as they advaced two doubles teams to the semi-finals. In the first round, Weber and Ritchie defeated Nebraska's Stephanie Evans and Abby Buxton 8-3. They next defeated Drake's Kari Sloboth and Sarah Plowman 8-1. In the semifinnals, they defeated teammates Kaitlin Dunham and Sofia Ayala 8-6. Tomorrow, they could claim the tournament with a victory over Drake's Irina Kalashnikova and Veronica Leszayalova. To reach the semifinals prior to their loss to Weber and Ritchie, Dunham and newcomer Ayala first defeated Iowa State's Chrissy Deroin and Reka Kelemen 8-1. In the next round, they defeated another Cyclone team in Jill Palen and Caitlin Loprinzi 8-4.

In other doubles action, after falling in the first round, Raquel Wagner and Chrissy Svetlic have rebouned nicely to reach the finals of the doubles consolation. They have beaten a Nebraska doubles tandem as well as an Iowa State Cyclone team to reach the finals.
