College Park, Md. - Mizzou's Chrissy Svetlic and Mallory Weber took a hard-fought, 8-5, victory over Auburn's Melissa Kroning and Gaby Beelen in the finals of the Maryland Terrapin Invitational. The match went back and forth before Svetlic took a hard forehand up the line on match point to force the Auburn error and claim the tournament title.
The Tigers had also advanced three players to singles finals. After narrowly dropping her first round, Weber had won two rounds to reach the "A" consolation final. She and Maryland's Karin Lundmark went back and forth and each held three match points on each other during the marathon. Lundmark was able to come through on her third match point to win, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (13-11).
The Tigers' Maureen Modesto had won three matches to advance to the "C" final. She dropped her first match of the year to Auburn's Mary Claude Slade, who was the 2nd overall seed. The freshman now stands at 7-1 on the season. Raquel Wagner had won two straight set matches to reach the "D" final. She dropped a three-set decision to George Washington's Jennifer Hirsch, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Other Tigers collecting singles wins in play-out positions were Kaitlin Dunham defeating Auburn, Kaitlyn Ritchie over Army, and Sofia Ayala over Miami (Ohio).
"It was really great to get out and play against some competition we normally don't see," said head Coach Blake Starkey. "Our players and Maryland's players in particular, hung out a lot between matches, and even rooted for each other, which was great sportsmanship and nice to see. All in all, this was a great trip, we had a lot of fun, and we just got a lot of solid matches in."
The Tigers will next be in action as they host the Mizzou Tiger Invitational October 12th-14th in Columbia.
