Tigers Conclude Solid Day One at Maryland Invitational

College Park, Md. - Highlighting the first day of the University of Maryland Terrapin Invitational, Chrissy Svetlic and Mallory Weber knocked out the top seed in the tournament in their second round. The two Tigers played solid doubles to beat the 47th-ranked Auburn pair of Fani Chifchieva and Whitney Chappell, 8-6.

Also in pairs play, Kaitlin Dunham and Sofia Ayala defeated Miami's Leda Pesatova and Vicki Pudilo, 8-2. Maureen Modesto and Kaitlyn Ritchie fell to George Washington's Kendall Swenson and Nadia Demidenko, 8-6.

Five Tigers advanced in the singles draw. Freshman Kaitlyn Ritchie took a 6-3, 6-1 win over Maryland's Maggie MacKeever, who was the second seed of the B draw. Fellow freshman Maureen Modesto took a 6-4, 6-1 win over Northern Florida's Mary Crider. Kaitlin Dunham easily defeated Northern Florida's Adrienne Duenas, 6-0, 6-4. Newcomer Sofia Ayala defeated Britney Barsky of the University of Delaware 6-3, 6-3. Mallory Weber fell, 6-4, 6-4, to the tournament's second seed, Miami's Brittney Larson. Chrissy Svetlic fell to George Washington's Kendall Swenson, 7-6 (6), 7-5. Raquel Wagner had a bye in her first round and did not play. The Tigers resume play tomorrow at the Maryland Tennis Center which features 16 outdoor courts and 12 indoor.
