
Tiger Softball Closes Tournament with 10-2 Win

Springfield, Mo. - In their final game of the Missouri State Spring Classic, the Missouri softball team held off Saint Louis University, 10-2, in six innings at Missouri State Softball Field in Springfield, Mo. The Tigers finished the tournament with a 3-1 record and improved to 8-7 on the season.
Senior outfielder Janessa Roening (Port Angeles, Wash.) scored Missouri's first run of the game. After ripping a first inning double to the gap in right center, Roening tagged up and took third on redshirt sophomore Micaela Minner's (Sanger, Texas) groundout to second. With sophomore first baseman Amanda Renth (Mascoutah, Ill.) at the plate and two outs on the board, Saint Louis pitcher Lorena Floccari through a wild pitch that sent Roening sliding home.
Leading off the second inning, sophomore designated player Jen Bruck (St. Peters, Mo.) powered a single to centerfield and stole second during junior Amanda Jo White's (Tallmadge, Ohio) at bat. White followed with Missouri's second of three consecutive hits sending Bruck to third. Catcher Alyson Tobyne singled to second bringing Bruck home and freshman Andee Allen (Barnhart, Mo.) laid down a bunt that advanced Missouri's runners to second and third. Sophomore Sarah Stringer (Auxvasse, Mo.) grounded out to first but provided White time to run home and Tobyne to take third. Returning to the top of the order junior Leanne Bowers (Arnold, Mo,) singled driving in Missouri's third run of the inning.
Saint Louis University scored one run off two hits and one Tiger error in the top of the third inning and Missouri returned with one run in the bottom of the third to keep a four run lead.
The Tigers contained the Bilikins offense in the top of the fourth inning and added to their Mizzou lead with three runs off one hit and two SLU fielding errors in the bottom of the fourth.
Saint Louis could only score one final run on Missouri. With two outs on the board and freshman pitcher Megan Dennis (Liberty, Mo) in the circle, second baseman AshLeigh Williams doubled to centerfield and scored on a single to left by Logan Justice.
All three of Missouri's pitchers made an appearance in the circle. Bruck, who made her sixth start of the season was credited with the win and twirled four innings of work, while Dennis tossed for one inning. Junior Kathy Masterson (St. Louis, Mo.) entered the game in the sixth inning.
Missouri was able to close down the game in the bottom of the sixth inning scoring two runs off one hit and one error. Five of Missouri's 10 runs were earned/
Missouri returns to Columbia for their home opener, Tuesday, March 7, a doubleheader against Truman State beginning at 2 p.m. (CST). Game two is slated for a 4 p.m. (CST) start with KCOU broadcasting live on 88.1 FM.
