
Tigers Top Bulldogs, 10-3, in Home Opener

Columbia, Mo. - Opening the home portion of its schedule, the Missouri softball (9-7) team won its first game of a doubleheader against Truman State (3-3), 10-3, at University Field. The Tigers tallied 10 hits, and scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning marking only the second time of the season Missouri has notched six runs in a single inning.
Truman State jumped to an early lead scoring three runs on one hit in the top of the second. With two outs on the board, designated player Kelly Walsma was hit by pitch to reach first and relieved by Sherri Johnson who pinch ran. Third baseman Rebekah Shea drew a walk bringing up eight-hole hitter Katie Noski who hit a homer over the right field fence helping the Bulldog's to their only runs of the game. Missouri sophomore pitcher Jen Bruck (St. Peters, Mo.) managed to shutdown the inning, striking out centerfielder Dani Mayer.
Bruck was credited with her ninth win of the season (9-5) and freshman Megan Dennis (Liberty, Mo.) entered in the fifth inning to shut down six Bulldogs in 13 at bats.
The Tigers capitalized on three Missouri hits and three Bulldog errors to score six runs in the bottom of the inning. Batting leadoff, redshirt sophomore Micaela Minner struck out swinging to bring up sophomore Amanda Renth (Mascoutah, Ill.). Notching her first hit in two games, Renth singled down the left field line and sophomore Amy Henke served as pinch runner. Catcher Kathy Masterson (St. Louis, Mo.) took first on a dropped ball by Truman State third baseman Shea sending Henke to second. Junior Amanda Jo White (Tallmadge, Ohio) flew out to right field bringing freshman shortstop Andee Allen (Barnhart, Mo.) to the plate. Allen came through with her second triple of the season, advancing Henke and Masterson home. Allen ran home on a passed ball and junior Sarah Stringer (Auxvasse, Mo.) drew a walk to reach first later stealing second during junior outfielder Leanne Bowers (Arnold, Mo.) at bat. Returning to the top of the order Bowers singled to centerfield sending Stringer in for Missouri's fourth run. Bruck made her way to third on an error by Truman State's Christen Belcher sending Bowers home. Three-hole hitter Janessa Roening (Port Angeles, Wash.) made her way to second on the Bulldog's third error of the inning, advancing Bruck in for the sixth Tiger run. After cycling through the lineup, Minner returned to the plate and flew out to end the inning.
Missouri went on to score an additional four runs, one in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth. Masterson scored Missouri's 10th and final run of the game, a leadoff homer in the bottom of the fifth. The Tigers swiped four bags in their game against Truman State, the second highest total on the season.
