CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The No. 8 Missouri Tigers earned three event titles en route to a 195.500-195.125 win over the No. 25 Illinois Illini on Saturday night in Champaign, Ill. Senior Jodie Heinicka recorded her fifth consecutive bars title, junior Whitney Crater earned titles on vault and floor and freshman Adrianne Perry claimed her third all-around title of the season for the Tigers.
"We gutted this one out," said Missouri head coach Rob Drass. "I think we had some great things happen today. We vaulted better than we have all season, we really did a great job there. Bars had flashes of greatness then a little struggle here and there and the same goes for floor and beam."
"The team did a great job and had a good performance. We're still looking to fine tune all those things and put everything all together. All the pieces are there, we've done them on different occasions. We just have to do them all at once."
Starting on bars, the Tigers recorded a 48.775 on the event. Mizzou was led Heinicka's 9.850, which gave the senior her fifth consecutive bars title. Finishing in second place was freshman Adrianne Perry with a 9.800 while senior Sarah Zigler posted a 9.775 to tie for third place.
Moving next to vault, Missouri recorded a 49.075 to push the event total over 49 for the first time this season. With that score, Mizzou has now scored at least a 49 on all four events so far this season. Crater earned first place after she paced the Tigers with a season-high 9.875 while Heinicka finished second with a 9.850 and senior Lauren Schwartzman notched a 9.800 to tie for third.
On floor, the Tigers posted a 48.750 as Crater won her second event title of the night with a 9.850. Also impressive on floor for Mizzou was Adrianne Perry, who notched a 9.800 to finish tied for third place.
Ending the night on its most consistent event, the Tigers posted a 48.900 on beam. Schwartzman earned a 9.850 to tie take home second place while freshman Alicia Hatcher and junior Amanda Pezzullo tied for fourth with a 9.800.
"The Big 12 is very balanced this year. Oklahoma has been defeated by Nebraska and Iowa State but is ranked ahead of all of us. I'm sure we'll get Oklahoma's best next weekend, we'll have to be very on to beat them."
The Tigers return home Friday, Feb. 17 with a Big 12 Conference matchup with No. 6 Oklahoma at 7:00 p.m. CT in the Hearnes Center. Mizzou then hosts the 26th annual The Callaway Bank Cat Classic on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24-25 at 7:00 p.m. CT in the Hearnes Center. The meet will feature a team competition on Friday, Feb. 24 against Ball State, Northern Illinois and Pittsburgh and the individual event finals on Satruday, Feb. 25.
